Journal ArticleDOI
Radical prostatectomy versus watchful waiting in early prostate cancer.
Anna Bill-Axelson,Anna Bill-Axelson,Lars Holmberg,Mirja Ruutu,Hans Garmo,Jennifer R. Stark,Jennifer R. Stark,Christer Busch,Stig Nordling,Michael Häggman,Swen-Olof Andersson,Stefan Bratell,Anders Spångberg,Juni Palmgren,Gunnar Steineck,Hans-Olov Adami,Hans-Olov Adami,Jan-Erik Johansson +17 more
TL;DR: Radical prostatectomy was associated with a reduction in the rate of death from prostate cancer, and men with extracapsular tumor growth may benefit from adjuvant local or systemic treatment.
Journal ArticleDOI
Results of Conservative Management of Clinically Localized Prostate Cancer
Gerald W. Chodak,Ronald A. Thisted,Glenn S. Gerber,Jan-Erik Johansson,Jan Adolfsson,George W. Jones,Geoff D. Chisholm,Boaz Moskovitz,Pinhas M. Livne,John J. Warner +9 more
TL;DR: The strategy of initial conservative management and delayed hormone therapy is a reasonable choice for some men with grade 1 or 2 clinically localized prostate cancer, particularly for those who have an average life expectancy of 10 years or less.
Journal ArticleDOI
Radical Prostatectomy or Watchful Waiting in Early Prostate Cancer
Anna Bill-Axelson,Lars Holmberg,Hans Garmo,Jennifer R. Rider,Kimmo Taari,Christer Busch,Stig Nordling,Michael Häggman,Swen-Olof Andersson,Anders Spångberg,Ove Andrén,Juni Palmgren,Gunnar Steineck,Hans-Olov Adami,Jan-Erik Johansson +14 more
TL;DR: Extended follow-up confirmed a substantial reduction in mortality after radical prostatectomy; the number needed to treat to prevent one death continued to decrease when the treatment was modified according to age at diagnosis and tumor risk.
Journal ArticleDOI
A common variant associated with prostate cancer in European and African populations
Laufey T. Amundadottir,Patrick Sulem,Julius Gudmundsson,Agnar Helgason,Adam Baker,Bjarni A. Agnarsson,Asgeir Sigurdsson,Kristrun R. Einarsson,Rosa B. Barkardottir,Jeffrey R. Gulcher,Augustine Kong,Unnur Thorsteinsdottir,Kari Stefansson +45 more
TL;DR: Allele −8 of the microsatellite DG8S737 was associated with prostate cancer in three case-control series of European ancestry from Iceland, Sweden and the US, and the association was replicated in an African American case- control group with a similar OR, leading to a greater estimated PAR.
Journal ArticleDOI
A randomized trial comparing radical prostatectomy with watchful waiting in early prostate cancer
Lars Holmberg,Anna Bill-Axelson,Fred Helgesen,Jaakko O. Salo,Per Folmerz,Michael Häggman,Swen-Olof Andersson,Anders Spångberg,Christer Busch,Steg Nordling,Juni Palmgren,Hans-Olov Adami,Jan-Erik Johansson,Bo Johan Norlén +13 more
TL;DR: In this randomized trial, radical prostatectomy significantly reduced disease-specific mortality, but there was no significant difference between surgery and watchful waiting in terms of overall survival.
