A Randomized Trial of Deep-Brain Stimulation for Parkinson's Disease
Günther Deuschl,Carmen Schade-Brittinger,Paul Krack,Jens Volkmann,Helmut Schäfer,Kai Bötzel,C. Daniels,Angela Deutschländer,Ulrich Dillmann,Wilhelm Eisner,Doreen Gruber,Wolfgang Hamel,Jan Herzog,Rüdiger Hilker,Stephan Klebe,Manja Kloss,J. Koy,Martin Krause,Andreas Kupsch,Delia Lorenz,Stefan Lorenzl,H. Maximilian Mehdorn,Jean Richard Moringlane,Wolfgang H. Oertel,Marcus O. Pinsker,Heinz Reichmann,Alexander Reuss,Gerd-Helge Schneider,Alfons Schnitzler,Ulrich Steude,Volker Sturm,Lars Timmermann,Volker M. Tronnier,Thomas Trottenberg,Lars Wojtecki,Elisabeth Wolf,Werner Poewe,Jürgen Voges +37 more
TL;DR: In this six-month study of patients under 75 years of age with severe motor complications of Parkinson's disease, neurostimulation of the subthalamic nucleus was more effective than medical management alone.
Journal ArticleDOI
Detection and quantification of vascular endothelial growth factor/vascular permeability factor in brain tumor tissue and cyst fluid: the key to angiogenesis?
TL;DR: Data support previous reports, which stated that VEGF/VPF acts as a paracrine growth and permeability factor in brain tumors and may contribute to tumor growth by initiating tumor angiogenesis.
Journal ArticleDOI
Evidence of Focal Genetic Microheterogeneity in Glioblastoma Multiforme by Area-Specific CGH on Microdissected Tumor Cells
Volker Jung,Bernd F. M. Romeike,Wolfram Henn,Wolfgang Feiden,Jean Richard Moringlane,Klaus D. Zang,Steffi Urbschat +6 more
TL;DR: Evidence of considerable intratumoral genetic heterogeneity in glioblastoma multiforme is given and microdissection provides a sensitive tool for the detection of quantitative chromosomal changes that are present only regionally within a given tumor.
Journal ArticleDOI
Thalamic stimulation for essential tremor activates motor and deactivates vestibular cortex
Andres O. Ceballos-Baumann,Henning Boecker,W. Fogel,François Alesch,Peter Bartenstein,Bastian Conrad,Nico J. Diederich,I. von Falkenhayn,Jean Richard Moringlane,Markus Schwaiger,Volker M. Tronnier +10 more
TL;DR: Beneficial effects of VIM stimulation in essential tremor are associated with increased synaptic activity in motor cortex, possibly due to nonphysiologic activation of thalamofrontal projections or frequency-dependent neuroinhibition.
Journal ArticleDOI
Differential modulation of subcortical target and cortex during deep brain stimulation
Bernhard Haslinger,Henning Boecker,Christian Büchel,J. Vesper,Volker M. Tronnier,R. Pfister,Francois Alesch,Jean Richard Moringlane,Joachim K. Krauss,Bastian Conrad,Markus Schwaiger,Andres O. Ceballos-Baumann +11 more
TL;DR: It is shown that variations in voltage and frequency of thalamic stimulation have differential effects in a thalamo-cortical circuitry and suggests that the scope of DBS extends beyond an ablation-like on-off effect: DBS could rather allow a gradual tuning of activity within a neuronal circuit.
