Transitory microbial habitat in the hyperarid Atacama Desert
Dirk Schulze-Makuch,Dirk Schulze-Makuch,Dirk Wagner,Samuel P. Kounaves,Samuel P. Kounaves,Kai Mangelsdorf,Kevin G. Devine,Jean-Pierre de Vera,Philippe Schmitt-Kopplin,Hans-Peter Grossart,Hans-Peter Grossart,Victor Parro,Martin Kaupenjohann,Albert Galy,Beate Schneider,Alessandro Airo,Jan Frösler,Alfonso F. Davila,Felix L. Arens,Luis Cáceres,Francisco Solís Cornejo,Daniel Carrizo,Lewis Dartnell,Jocelyne DiRuggiero,Markus Flury,Lars Ganzert,Mark O. Gessner,Mark O. Gessner,Peter Grathwohl,Lisa Guan,Jacob Heinz,Matthias Hess,Frank Keppler,Deborah Maus,Christopher P. McKay,Rainer U. Meckenstock,Wren Montgomery,Elizabeth Oberlin,Alexander J. Probst,Johan S. Saenz,Tobias Sattler,Janosch Schirmack,Mark A. Sephton,Michael Schloter,Jenny Uhl,Bernardita Valenzuela,Gisle Vestergaard,Lars Wörmer,Pedro Zamorano +48 more
TL;DR: It is shown that even the hyperarid Atacama Desert can provide a habitable environment for microorganisms that allows them to become metabolically active following an episodic increase in moisture and that once it decreases, so does the activity of the microbiota.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cyclic Lipopeptides of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens subsp. plantarum Colonizing the Lettuce Rhizosphere Enhance Plant Defense Responses Toward the Bottom Rot Pathogen Rhizoctonia solani
Soumitra Paul Chowdhury,Jenny Uhl,Rita Grosch,Sylvia Maria Campbell Alquéres,Sabrina Pittroff,Kristin Dietel,Philippe Schmitt-Kopplin,Rainer Borriss,Anton Hartmann +8 more
TL;DR: It is shown that nonribosomally synthesized secondary metabolites of FZB42 are actually produced in the lettuce rhizosphere and contribute to the disease suppression by mediating plant defense gene expression toward the pathogen R. solani.
Journal ArticleDOI
Membrane vesicle-mediated bacterial communication.
Masanori Toyofuku,Masanori Toyofuku,Kana Morinaga,Hashimoto Yohei,Jenny Uhl,Hiroko Shimamura,Hideki Inaba,Philippe Schmitt-Kopplin,Leo Eberl,Nobuhiko Nomura +9 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that the hydrophobic signal N-hexadecanoyl-L-homoserine lactone, which is produced by Paracoccus sp.
Journal ArticleDOI
How representative are dissolved organic matter (DOM) extracts? A comprehensive study of sorbent selectivity for DOM isolation.
Yan Li,Mourad Harir,Jenny Uhl,Basem Kanawati,Marianna Lucio,Kirill S. Smirnov,Boris P. Koch,Philippe Schmitt-Kopplin,Norbert Hertkorn +8 more
TL;DR: FTMS-based principal component analysis (PCA) provided essentially analogous alignment of SR DOM and NS DOM molecular compositions according to the five established groups of SPE classification, and corroborated the sorption-mechanism-based selectivity of DOM extraction in both cases.
Journal ArticleDOI
Geochemistry of Dissolved Organic Matter in a Spatially Highly Resolved Groundwater Petroleum Hydrocarbon Plume Cross-Section.
Sabine E.-M. Dvorski,Michael Gonsior,Norbert Hertkorn,Jenny Uhl,Hubert Müller,Christian Griebler,Philippe Schmitt-Kopplin +6 more
TL;DR: The orthogonal high resolution analytical approach enabled a comprehensive molecular level understanding of the DOM with respect to in situ petroleum hydrocarbon biodegradation and microbial sulfate reduction and the role of natural DOM as potential cosubstrate and detoxification reactant may improve future bioremediation strategies.
