The civilian, commercial, and defense sectors of most advanced industrialized nations are faced with a tremendous set of environmental problems related to the remediation of hazardous wastes, contaminated groundwaters, and the control of toxic air contaminants. For example, the slow pace of hazardous waste remediation at military installations around the world is causing a serious delay in conversion of many of these facilities to civilian uses. Over the last 10 years problems related to hazardous waste remediation have emerged as a high national and international priority.

C–H activation has surfaced as an increasingly powerful tool for molecular sciences, with notable applications to material sciences, crop protection, drug discovery, and pharmaceutical industries, among others. Despite major advances, the vast majority of these C–H functionalizations required precious 4d or 5d transition metal catalysts. Given the cost-effective and sustainable nature of earth-abundant first row transition metals, the development of less toxic, inexpensive 3d metal catalysts for C–H activation has gained considerable recent momentum as a significantly more environmentally-benign and economically-attractive alternative. Herein, we provide a comprehensive overview on first row transition metal catalysts for C–H activation until summer 2018.

Synthesis of the η1‐Phosphaalkyne Complex trans‐(FeH(P CtBu)(dppe)2)(BF4) and Its Conversion into a η1‐ Fluorophosphaalkene Complex. Crystal Structure of trans‐(FeH(PF=CHtBu)( dppe)2)(FeCl2F2).

The complex [RuCl2(PPh3)3] or [RuCl(H)(dma)(PPh3)2](dma = MeCONMe2) reacts with 2 mol of PF3 to give cis-[RuCl2(PF3)2(PPh3)2]. The analogous complex cis-[RuCl2{PF2(NMe2)}2(PPh3)2] made from either [RuCl2-(PPh3)3] or [{RuCl2(OCMe2)(PPh3)2}2]. undergoes ready dissociation of PPh3 in solution to give [RuCl2{PF2-(NMe2)}2(PPh3)]. Trifluorophosphine or PF2(NMe2) reacts with solutions of [RuCl2(PPh3)3] in dimethylformamide to give complexes of the type [RuCl3(dmf)L(PPh3)2][L = PF3 or PF2(NMe2)] which readily undergo dimerisation reactions to yield binuclear complexes [(Ph3P)2LRuCl3RuCl(L)(PPh3)]. Reduction of [OsCl3-(PMe2Ph)3] with zinc in the presence of PF3 affords trans-[OsCl2(PF3)(PMe2Ph)3] which can be isomerised to the cis complex. The related trans- and cis-[OsCl2(PF3)2(PMe2Ph)2] are also described; the former complex exhibits a very large 2J(PMP′) coupling constant between the two PF3, ligands. Structures of all the complexes reported have been elucidated by 19F and 31P n.m.r. spectroscopy.
