Journal ArticleDOI
Lattice misorientation evolution and grain refinement in Al-Si alloys under high-strain shear deformation
Bharat Gwalani,Wenkai Fu,Matthew Olszta,Joshua Silverstein,Digvijay Yadav,Praveena Manimunda,Anthony Guzman,Kelvin Y. Xie,Aashish Rohatgi,Suveen N. Mathaudhu,Suveen N. Mathaudhu,Cynthia Powell,Peter V. Sushko,Yulan Li,Arun Devaraj +14 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a post-deformation microstructural analysis, through a combined computational and experimental approach, conclusively shows that the initial volume fraction of the hard Si phase enhances the evolution of local lattice misorientation, leading to efficient grain refinement during severe plastic shear deformation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Multimodal analysis of spatially heterogeneous microstructural refinement and softening mechanisms in three-pass friction stir processed Al-4Si alloy
J.D. Escobar,Bharat Gwalani,Matthew J. Olszta,Joshua Silverstein,Nicole R. Overman,Luciano Bergmann,Jorge Fernandez dos Santos,Peter Staron,Emad Maawad,Benjamin Klusemann,Suveen N. Mathaudhu,Suveen N. Mathaudhu,Arun Devaraj +12 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the relationship between microstructural evolution and local microhardness in a model binary Al-4 at.% Si alloy subjected to three-pass friction stir processing was analyzed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Microstructural Assessment of a Multiple-Intermetallic-Strengthened Aluminum Alloy Produced from Gas-Atomized Powder by Hot Extrusion and Friction Extrusion.
Tianhao Wang,Bharat Gwalani,Joshua Silverstein,Jens T. Darsell,Saumyadeep Jana,Timothy J. Roosendaal,Angel Ortiz,Wayne K. Daye,Tom Pelletiers,Scott Whalen +9 more
TL;DR: Results from equilibrium thermodynamic calculations show that the strengthening IMC phases are stable at elevated temperatures (up to ≈ 600 °C), thus enhancing the high-temperature strength of the extrudates.
Journal ArticleDOI
Thermal stability and mechanical properties of cold-sprayed Nickel-Yttria coating
Bharat Gwalani,Bharat Gwalani,Agustina Anson Fernandez,Miao Song,Joshua Silverstein,J.D. Escobar,Tianhao Wang,Mayur Pole,Kyle Johnson,Bharat K. Jasthi,Arun Devaraj,Kenneth Ross +11 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the phase stability, mechanical properties of Ni-Yttria (Ni-Y2O3) cermet coatings on a 304 stainless steel (SS304) substrate were investigated.
