Mediastinoscopy vs Endosonography for Mediastinal Nodal Staging of Lung Cancer: A Randomized Trial
Jouke T. Annema,Jan P. van Meerbeeck,Robert C. Rintoul,Christophe Dooms,Ellen Deschepper,Olaf M. Dekkers,Paul De Leyn,Jerry Braun,Nicholas Carroll,Marleen Praet,Frederick de Ryck,Johan Vansteenkiste,Frank Vermassen,Michel I.M. Versteegh,Maud Veselic,Andrew G. Nicholson,Klaus F. Rabe,Kurt G. Tournoy +17 more
TL;DR: Among patients with (suspected) NSCLC, a staging strategy combining endosonography and surgical staging compared with surgical staging alone resulted in greater sensitivity for mediastinal nodal metastases and fewer unnecessary thoracotomies.
Journal ArticleDOI
An electronic nose in the discrimination of patients with non-small cell lung cancer and COPD.
Silvano Dragonieri,Silvano Dragonieri,Jouke T. Annema,Robert Schot,Marc P. van der Schee,Marc P. van der Schee,Antonio Spanevello,Pierluigi Carratù,Onofrio Resta,Klaus F. Rabe,Peter J. Sterk,Peter J. Sterk +11 more
TL;DR: VOC-patterns of exhaled breath discriminates patients with lung cancer from COPD patients as well as healthy controls, and the electronic nose may qualify as a non-invasive diagnostic tool for lung cancer in the future.
Journal ArticleDOI
Combined endobronchial and esophageal endosonography for the diagnosis and staging of lung cancer: European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE) Guideline, in cooperation with the European Respiratory Society (ERS) and the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons (ESTS)
Peter Vilmann,Paul Frost Clementsen,Sara Colella,Mette Siemsen,Paul De Leyn,Jean-Marc Dumonceau,Felix J.F. Herth,Alberto Larghi,Enrique Vazquez-Sequeiros,Cesare Hassan,Laurence Crombag,Daniël A. Korevaar,Lars Konge,Jouke T. Annema +13 more
TL;DR: This is an official guideline of the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, produced in cooperation with the European Respiratory Society, and addresses the benefit and burden associated with combined endobronchial and esophageal mediastinal nodal staging of lung cancer.
Journal ArticleDOI
Transbronchial Cryobiopsies for the Diagnosis of Diffuse Parenchymal Lung Diseases: Expert Statement from the Cryobiopsy Working Group on Safety and Utility and a Call for Standardization of the Procedure.
Jürgen Hetzel,Fabien Maldonado,Claudia Ravaglia,Athol U. Wells,Thomas V. Colby,Sara Tomassetti,Jay H. Ryu,Oren Fruchter,Sara Piciucchi,Alessandra Dubini,Alberto Cavazza,Marco Chilosi,Nicola Sverzellati,Dominique Valeyre,Dimitri Leduc,Simon L.F. Walsh,Stefano Gasparini,Martin Hetzel,Lars Hagmeyer,Maik Haentschel,Ralf Eberhardt,Kaid Darwiche,Lonny Yarmus,Alfonso Torrego,Ganesh Krishna,Pallav L. Shah,Jouke T. Annema,Felix J.F. Herth,Venerino Poletti +28 more
TL;DR: This expert statement proposed during the third international conference on “Transbronchial Cryobiopsy in Diffuse Parenchymal Lung Disease” formulates evidence- and expert-based suggestions on the indications, contraindications, patient selection, and procedural aspects of the procedure.
Journal ArticleDOI
Endobronchial Ultrasound With Transbronchial Needle Aspiration for Restaging the Mediastinum in Lung Cancer
Felix J.F. Herth,Jouke T. Annema,Ralf Eberhardt,Kazuhiro Yasufuku,Armin Ernst,Mark Krasnik,Robert C. Rintoul +6 more
TL;DR: EBUS-TBNA is a sensitive, specific, accurate, and minimally invasive test for mediastinal restaging of patients with NSCLC, but because of the low negative predictive value, tumor-negative findings should be confirmed by surgical staging before thoracotomy.
