Journal ArticleDOI
Improving the Conservation of Mediterranean Chondrichthyans: The ELASMOMED DNA Barcode Reference Library.
Alessia Cariani,Silvia Messinetti,Alice Ferrari,Marco Arculeo,Juan José Bonello,Leanne Bonnici,Rita Cannas,Pierluigi Carbonara,Alessandro Cau,Charis Charilaou,Najib El Ouamari,Fabio Fiorentino,Maria Cristina Follesa,Germana Garofalo,Daniel Golani,Ilaria Guarniero,Robert Hanner,Farid Hemida,Omar Kada,Sabrina Lo Brutto,Cecilia Mancusi,Gabriel Morey,Patrick J. Schembri,Fabrizio Serena,Letizia Sion,Marco Stagioni,Angelo Tursi,Nedo Vrgoč,Dirk Steinke,Fausto Tinti +29 more
TL;DR: Morphological misidentifications were found across most orders, further confirming the need for a comprehensive DNA barcoding library as a valuable tool for the reliable identification of specimens in support of taxonomist who are reviewing current identification keys.
Journal ArticleDOI
Not all that clear cut: intraspecific morphological variability in Squalus blainville (Risso, 1827) and implications for identification of the species
TL;DR: It is shown that intraspecific variability in supposedly diagnostic morphological features is large enough to render these unreliable to tell apart these two species, especially in the field.
Journal ArticleDOI
Puzzling over spurdogs: molecular taxonomy assessment of the Squalus species in the Strait of Sicily
Alice Ferrari,S. Di Crescenzo,Alessia Cariani,Valentina Crobe,A. Benvenuto,Federica Piattoni,Cecilia Mancusi,Leanne Bonnici,Juan José Bonello,Patrick J. Schembri,Fabrizio Serena,D. Massi,A. Titone,Fausto Tinti +13 more
TL;DR: The actual occurrence of Squalus megalops in the Mediterranean Sea has recently been questioned.
Journal ArticleDOI
Diet and trophic level of the longnose spurdog, Squalus blainville (Risso, 1826) in the 25-nautical mile Fisheries Management Zone around the Maltese Islands
TL;DR: There is some variation in diet between sexes and between maturity stages both in prey items and in the relative contribution of benthic, demersal, and pelagic prey.
