Journal ArticleDOI
Cloning of a novel bacteria-binding receptor structurally related to scavenger receptors and expressed in a subset of macrophages.
Outi Elomaa,Maarit Kangas,Carin Sahlberg,Juha Tuukkanen,Raija Sormunen,Annikki Liakka,Irma Thesleff,Georg Kraal,Karl Tryggvason +8 more
TL;DR: The results suggest that the novel protein is a macrophage-specific membrane receptor with a role in host defense, as it shows postnatal expression in macrophages, which are considered responsible for the binding of bacterial antigens and phagocytosis.
Journal ArticleDOI
Evidence for the presence of a proton pump of the vacuolar H(+)-ATPase type in the ruffled borders of osteoclasts.
H K Väänänen,E K Karhukorpi,Kai T. Sundquist,B. Wallmark,I Roininen,Teuvo A. Hentunen,Juha Tuukkanen,Päivi T. Lakkakorpi +7 more
TL;DR: The results suggest that osteoclast resorbs bone by secreting protons through vacuolar H(+)-ATPase, suggesting a vacUolar-type ATPase.
Journal ArticleDOI
Osteoblast-derived WNT16 represses osteoclastogenesis and prevents cortical bone fragility fractures
Sofia Movérare-Skrtic,Petra Henning,Xianwen Liu,Kenichi Nagano,Hiroaki Saito,Anna E Börjesson,Klara Sjögren,Sara H Windahl,Helen H. Farman,Bert Kindlund,Cecilia Engdahl,Antti Koskela,Fu-Ping Zhang,Emma Eriksson,Farasat Zaman,Ann Hammarstedt,Hanna Isaksson,Marta Bally,Ali Kassem,Catharina Lindholm,Olof Sandberg,Per Aspenberg,Lars Sävendahl,Jian Q. Feng,Jan Tuckermann,Juha Tuukkanen,Matti Poutanen,Roland Baron,Ulf H. Lerner,Francesca Gori,Claes Ohlsson +30 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated here that Wnt16-deficient mice develop spontaneous fractures as a result of low cortical thickness and high cortical porosity, which opens new avenues for the specific prevention or treatment of nonvertebral fractures, a substantial unmet medical need.
Journal ArticleDOI
Autoimmune regulator is expressed in the cells regulating immune tolerance in thymus medulla.
Maarit Heino,Pärt Peterson,Pärt Peterson,Jun Kudoh,Kentaro Nagamine,Anssi Lagerstedt,Vladimir Ovod,A Ranki,Immo Rantala,Markku Nieminen,Juha Tuukkanen,Hamish S. Scott,Stylianos E. Antonarakis,Nobuyoshi Shimizu,Kai Krohn,Kai Krohn +15 more
TL;DR: It is shown that AIRE is expressed in distinct cells in thymus medulla, and also in rare cells in lymph node paracortex and medulla and in spleen and fetal liver, but not in the target organs of autoimmune destruction.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effect of porosity on the osteointegration and bone ingrowth of a weight-bearing nickel–titanium bone graft substitute
TL;DR: Porous nickel-titanium alloy is a promising new material for a bone graft substitute with good strength properties and an elastic modulus closer to that of bone than any other metallic material and showed lower incidence of fibrosis within the porous implant.
