Journal ArticleDOI
Regulation of hepatic fatty acid elongase and desaturase expression in diabetes and obesity.
Yun Wang,Daniela Botolin,Jinghua Xu,Barbara Christian,Ernestine Mitchell,Bolleddula Jayaprakasam,Muraleedharan G. Nair,Jeffrey M. Peters,Julia V. Busik,L. Karl Olson,Donald B. Jump +10 more
TL;DR: A role is established for PPARα, LXR, SREBP-1, ChREBP, and MLX in the control of hepatic fatty acid elongase and desaturase expression and lipid composition.
Journal ArticleDOI
Hyperglycemia-Induced Reactive Oxygen Species Toxicity to Endothelial Cells Is Dependent on Paracrine Mediators
TL;DR: In vitro results indicate that HRECs respond to cytokines rather than high glucose, suggesting that in vivo diabetes–related endothelial injury in the retina may be due to glucose-induced cytokine release by other retinal cells and not a direct effect of high glucose.
Journal ArticleDOI
Tissue-specific, nutritional, and developmental regulation of rat fatty acid elongases.
TL;DR: Changes in Elovl-5 expression may account for much of the nutritional and developmental control of fatty acid elongation activity in the rat liver.
Journal ArticleDOI
Diabetic retinopathy is associated with bone marrow neuropathy and a depressed peripheral clock.
Julia V. Busik,Maria Tikhonenko,Ashay D Bhatwadekar,Madalina Opreanu,Nafissa Yakubova,Sergio Caballero,Danny Player,Takahiko Nakagawa,Aqeela Afzal,Jennifer L. Kielczewski,Andrew L. Sochacki,Stephanie Hasty,Sergio Li Calzi,Sungjin Kim,Shane K. Duclas,Mark S. Segal,Dennis L. Guberski,Walter J. Esselman,Michael E. Boulton,Maria B. Grant +19 more
TL;DR: It is shown that the decrease in EPC release from diabetic bone marrow is caused by bone marrow neuropathy and that these changes precede the development of diabetic retinopathy, acellular retinal capillaries, for the first time.
Journal ArticleDOI
Restructuring of the Gut Microbiome by Intermittent Fasting Prevents Retinopathy and Prolongs Survival in db/db Mice.
Eleni Beli,Yuanqing Yan,Leni Moldovan,Cristiano P. Vieira,Ruli Gao,Yaqian Duan,Ram Prasad,Ashay D. Bhatwadekar,Fletcher A. White,Steven D. Townsend,Luisa Chan,Caitlin Ryan,Daniel Morton,Emil G. Moldovan,Fang-I Chu,Gavin Y. Oudit,Hartmut Derendorf,Luciano Adorini,Xiaoxin X. Wang,Carmella Evans-Molina,Raghavendra G. Mirmira,Michael E. Boulton,Mervin C. Yoder,Qiuhong Li,Moshe Levi,Julia V. Busik,Maria B. Grant +26 more
TL;DR: The concept that IF prevents diabetic retinopathy by restructuring the microbiota toward species producing TUDCA and subsequent retinal protection by TGR5 activation is supported.
