Numerical evaluation of test setups for determining the shear strength of masonry

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors evaluate three common test setups through non-linear finite element analysis and provide new insights into their understanding and interpretation of such shear tests: (1) elastic analysis does not yield a stress distribution that is representative of the stress distribution at maximum resistance; (2) while friction coefficient is well estimated (the error is less than 10%), the local cohesion is underestimated by all three test setups of which the error lies between 13 and 32%; (3) the randomness of the material properties leads to a further underestimation of the mean value of the local
Journal ArticleDOI

Uncertainties in the Seismic Assessment of Historical Masonry Buildings

TL;DR: In this article, a Latin hypercube sampling was performed to create 400 sets of 11 material and modelling parameters, and incremental dynamic analyses were performed until building failure and seismic fragility curves were derived.
Book ChapterDOI

Towards displacement-based seismic design of modern unreinforced masonry structures

TL;DR: In this article, the drift capacity of URM walls with hollow clay bricks and mortar joints of normal thickness was investigated and an effective implementation of displacement-based design approaches requires reliable estimates of the structure's force and displacement capacity.
Journal ArticleDOI

Experimental investigation on the deformation capacity of lap splices under cyclic loading

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the influence of lap splice length, confining reinforcement and loading history on the deformation capacity of spliced RC wall boundary elements under uniaxial tension-compression cyclic loading.
Journal ArticleDOI

Characterization of mortar–timber and timber–timber cyclic friction in timber floor connections of masonry buildings

TL;DR: In this article, the results of an extensive experimental program with cyclic friction triplet tests between mortar and timber units, and between timber and mortar units were produced to be representative of connection typologies characteristic of pre-modern and contemporary construction periods.
