Expert position paper on air pollution and cardiovascular disease
David E. Newby,Pier Mannuccio Mannucci,Grethe S. Tell,Andrea A. Baccarelli,Robert D. Brook,Ken Donaldson,Francesco Forastiere,Massimo Franchini,Oscar H. Franco,Ian D. Graham,Gerard Hoek,Barbara Hoffmann,Marc Hoylaerts,Nino Künzli,Nino Künzli,Nicholas L. Mills,Juha Pekkanen,Juha Pekkanen,Annette Peters,Massimo F Piepoli,Sanjay Rajagopalan,Robert F. Storey +21 more
TL;DR: An enduring positive association between long-term exposure to air pollution and total and cardiovascular mortality is established, mainly due to coronary artery disease.
Journal ArticleDOI
Inhaled Nanoparticles Accumulate at Sites of Vascular Disease
Mark R. Miller,Jennifer Raftis,Jeremy P. Langrish,Steven G. McLean,Pawitrabhorn Samutrtai,Shea P. Connell,Simon Wilson,Alex T. Vesey,Paul H. B. Fokkens,A. John F. Boere,Petra Krystek,Colin Campbell,Patrick W. F. Hadoke,Ken Donaldson,Flemming R. Cassee,David E. Newby,Rodger Duffin,Nicholas L. Mills +17 more
TL;DR: Translocation of inhaled nanoparticles into the systemic circulation and accumulation at sites of vascular inflammation provides a direct mechanism that can explain the link between environmental nanoparticles and cardiovascular disease and has major implications for risk management in the use of engineered nanomaterials.

Journal ArticleDOI
Comparison of cellular toxicity caused by ambient ultrafine particles and engineered metal oxide nanoparticles
Senlin Lu,Wenchao Zhang,Rui Zhang,Pinwei Liu,Qiangxiang Wang,Yu Shang,Minghong Wu,Ken Donaldson,Qingyue Wang +8 more
TL;DR: The distribution pattern of metals from ambient particles showed that distributions of the metals in A549 cells were not uniform and followed the pattern Cu > Zn > Fe > Ni > Ni, suggesting that Cu was absorbed by A550 cells more easily than the other metals.
Journal ArticleDOI
Toxicology of ZnO and TiO2 nanoparticles on hepatocytes: impact on metabolism and bioenergetics.
Celine Filippi,A. Pryde,P. Cowan,Tricia Lee,Peter C. Hayes,Ken Donaldson,John N. Plevris,Vicki Stone +7 more
TL;DR: At sub-lethal concentrations, ZnO nanoparticles dramatically increased both gluconeogenesis and glycogenolysis, which warrants further in vivo studies.
