Islands as model systems in ecology and evolution: prospects fifty years after MacArthur‐Wilson
Ben H. Warren,Ben H. Warren,Ben H. Warren,Daniel Simberloff,Robert E. Ricklefs,Robin Aguilée,Fabien L. Condamine,Dominique Gravel,Hélène Morlon,Nicolas Mouquet,James Rosindell,Juliane Casquet,Elena Conti,Josselin Cornuault,José María Fernández-Palacios,Tomislav Hengl,Sietze J. Norder,Kenneth F. Rijsdijk,Isabel Sanmartín,Dominique Strasberg,Kostas A. Triantis,Luis M. Valente,Robert J. Whittaker,Rosemary G. Gillespie,Brent C. Emerson,Christophe Thébaud +25 more
TL;DR: P prospects for research on islands are highlighted to improve understanding of the ecology and evolution of communities in general and how attributes of islands combine to provide unusual research opportunities, the implications of which stretch far beyond islands.
Journal ArticleDOI
Clastic dykes in over-consolidated tills: evidence for subglacial hydrofracturing at Killiney Bay, eastern Ireland
TL;DR: A swarm of vertical gravel-filled dykes up to 6 m high and several decimetres wide, cut through an over-consolidated till at Killiney Bay as mentioned in this paper.
Journal ArticleDOI
Comment on "Protein sequences from mastodon and Tyrannosaurus rex revealed by mass spectrometry"
Michael Buckley,Angela K. Walker,Simon Y. W. Ho,Yang Yue,Colin Smith,Peter D. Ashton,Jane Thomas Oates,Enrico Cappellini,Hannah E.C. Koon,Kirsty Penkman,Ben Elsworth,Dave Ashford,Caroline Solazzo,Phillipe Andrews,John R. Strahler,Beth Shapiro,Peggy H. Ostrom,Hasand Gandhi,Webb Miller,Brian J. Raney,Maria Ines Zylber,M. Thomas P. Gilbert,Richard V. Prigodich,Michael J. Ryan,Kenneth F. Rijsdijk,Anwar Janoo,Matthew J. Collins +26 more
TL;DR: This paper used authentication tests developed for ancient DNA to evaluate claims by Asara et al. of collagen peptide sequences recovered from mastodon and Tyrannosaurus rex fossils, and found that although the mastodon samples pass these tests, absence of amino acid composition data, lack of evidence for peptide deamidation, and association of alpha1(I) collagen sequences with amphibians rather than birds suggest that T. rex does not.
Journal ArticleDOI
Observing artificially induced strain: implications for subglacial deformation
TL;DR: In this paper, a series of four successive thin-sections from a ceramic clay that was subjected to uniaxial compression was analyzed, and the Coulomb-plastic response to imposed shear was found to behave as Coulomb materials at least during the final stages of the deformation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Deformation styles as a key for interpreting glacial depositional environments
TL;DR: In this paper, a classification of deformation styles based on the geometry of structures rather than inferred environment of formation is proposed, which can be used to reconstruct palaeostress fields and to infer physical properties of sediments when they deformed.
