Journal ArticleDOI
Mechanisms linking obesity to insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes
TL;DR: In obese individuals, adipose tissue releases increased amounts of non-esterified fatty acids, glycerol, hormones, pro-inflammatory cytokines and other factors that are involved in the development of insulin resistance.
Journal ArticleDOI
Relationship of adiponectin to body fat distribution, insulin sensitivity and plasma lipoproteins: evidence for independent roles of age and sex.
Miriam Cnop,Peter J. Havel,Kristina M. Utzschneider,Daniel B. Carr,Madhur K. Sinha,Edward J. Boyko,Barbara M. Retzlaff,Robert H. Knopp,John D. Brunzell,Steven E. Kahn +9 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that adiponectin concentrations are determined by intra-abdominal fat mass, with additional independent effects of age and sex, and could link intra- abdominalFat with insulin resistance and an atherogenic lipoprotein profile.
Journal ArticleDOI
Complex Distribution, Not Absolute Amount of Adiponectin, Correlates with Thiazolidinedione-mediated Improvement in Insulin Sensitivity
Utpal B. Pajvani,Meredith Hawkins,Terry P. Combs,Michael W. Rajala,Tom Doebber,Joel P. Berger,John A. Wagner,Margaret Wu,Annemie Knopps,Anny H. Xiang,Kristina M. Utzschneider,Steven E. Kahn,Jerrold M. Olefsky,Thomas A. Buchanan,Philipp E. Scherer +14 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that changes in SA in a number of type 2 diabetic cohorts serve as a quantitative indicator of improvements in insulin sensitivity obtained during TZD treatment, whereas changes in total serum adiponectin levels do not correlate well at the individual level.
Journal ArticleDOI
Intra-Abdominal Fat Is a Major Determinant of the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III Criteria for the Metabolic Syndrome
Darcy B. Carr,Kristina M. Utzschneider,Rebecca L. Hull,Keiichi Kodama,Barbara M. Retzlaff,John D. Brunzell,Jane B. Shofer,Brian Fish,Robert H. Knopp,Steven E. Kahn +9 more
TL;DR: Although insulin resistance and central body fat are both associated with the metabolic syndrome, IAF is independently associated with all of the criteria, suggesting that it may have a pathophysiological role.
Journal ArticleDOI
Gestational Diabetes Mellitus Increases the Risk of Cardiovascular Disease in Women With a Family History of Type 2 Diabetes
Darcy B. Carr,Kristina M. Utzschneider,Rebecca L. Hull,Jenny Tong,Tara M. Wallace,Keiichi Kodama,Jane B. Shofer,Susan R. Heckbert,Edward J. Boyko,Wilfred Y. Fujimoto,Steven E. Kahn +10 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors sought to determine whether a history of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) further increases the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in parous women with first-degree relatives with type 2 diabetes.
