Evolution and history of grapevine (Vitis vinifera) under domestication: new morphometric perspectives to understand seed domestication syndrome and reveal origins of ancient European cultivars
Jean-Frédéric Terral,Elidie Tabard,Laurent Bouby,Sarah Ivorra,Thierry Pastor,Isabel Figueiral,Sandrine Picq,Sandrine Picq,Jean-Baptiste Chevance,Cécile Jung,Laurent Fabre,Christophe Tardy,Michel Compan,Roberto Bacilieri,Thierry Lacombe,Patrice This +15 more
TL;DR: Analysis of variation in seed morphology aims to provide accurate criteria for the discrimination between wild grapes and modern cultivars and to understand changes in functional traits in relation to the domestication process.
Journal ArticleDOI
Early Neolithic wine of Georgia in the South Caucasus
Patrick McGovern,Mindia Jalabadze,Stephen Batiuk,Michael P. Callahan,Karen E. Smith,Gretchen R. Hall,Eliso Kvavadze,David Maghradze,Nana Rusishvili,Laurent Bouby,Osvaldo Failla,Gabriele Cola,Luigi Mariani,Elisabetta Boaretto,Roberto Bacilieri,Patrice This,Nathan Wales,David Lordkipanidze +17 more
TL;DR: The earliest biomolecular archaeological evidence for grape wine and viniculture from the Near East, at ca. 6,000-5,800 BC, was provided by as mentioned in this paper.
Journal ArticleDOI
Bioarchaeological Insights into the Process of Domestication of Grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) during Roman Times in Southern France
Laurent Bouby,Isabel Figueiral,Anne Bouchette,Núria Rovira,Sarah Ivorra,Thierry Lacombe,Thierry Pastor,Sandrine Picq,Sandrine Picq,Philippe Marinval,Jean-Frédéric Terral +10 more
TL;DR: This work analyzes uncharred waterlogged grape pips from 17 archaeological sites to identify the extent of domestication in the grapes cultivated by Romans in Southern France during the period 50 BCE–500 CE and shows that both subspecies can be discriminated using simple measurements.
Journal ArticleDOI
Microsatellites from archaeological Vitis vinifera seeds allow a tentative assignment of the geographical origin of ancient cultivars
TL;DR: Preliminary data show that microsatellite sequences of archaeological V. vinifera seeds can be used to investigate the origin and history of ancient cultivars by comparison with a micros satellite database of modern cultivars.
Journal ArticleDOI
Palaeogenomic insights into the origins of French grapevine diversity.
Jasmin Ramos-Madrigal,Anne Kathrine W. Runge,Anne Kathrine W. Runge,Laurent Bouby,Thierry Lacombe,José Alfredo Samaniego Castruita,Anne-Françoise Adam-Blondon,Isabel Figueiral,Charlotte Hallavant,José M. Martínez-Zapater,Caroline Schaal,Reinhard Töpfer,Bent O. Petersen,Thomas Sicheritz-Pontén,Patrice This,Roberto Bacilieri,Thomas M. P. Gilbert,Thomas M. P. Gilbert,Nathan Wales +18 more
TL;DR: Genomic sequencing of 28 archaeological grape seeds, dating back as far as the Iron Age, finds close relationships to today’s cultivars, including a genetic match to Savagnin Blanc from 1100 ce.
