Chronic pain: an update on burden, best practices, and new advances
TL;DR: The biopsychosocial model of chronic pain this paper presents physical symptoms as the denouement of a dynamic interaction between biological, psychological, and social factors, which can be classified as nociceptive (from tissue injury), neuropathic (from nerve injury), or nociplastic (from a sensitised nervous system).
Journal ArticleDOI
A comparison of placebo effects in clinical analgesic trials versus studies of placebo analgesia.
TL;DR: It is suggested that placebo analgesic effects are most optimally conceptualized in terms of perception of the placebo agent, and therefore a new definition of placebo response is proposed.
Journal ArticleDOI
The contributions of suggestion, desire, and expectation to placebo effects in irritable bowel syndrome patients. An empirical investigation.
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated external factors that may influence the magnitude of placebo analgesia as well as psychological factors that mediate place-drug analgesia in irritable bowl syndrome (IBS) patients.
Journal ArticleDOI
Increased placebo analgesia over time in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) patients is associated with desire and expectation but not endogenous opioid mechanisms
TL;DR: Ratings of expected pain levels, desire for pain relief and anxiety decreased over time and contributed to more variance in placebo and lidocaine responses during the last half of the session, suggesting that a reduction in negative emotions may be central to placebo effects.
Journal ArticleDOI

TL;DR: This paper forms a first step towards developing evidence-based and ethical recommendations about the implications of placebo and nocebo research for medical practice, based on the current state of evidence and the consensus of experts.
