Journal ArticleDOI
Erythropoietin in traumatic brain injury (EPO-TBI): a double-blind randomised controlled trial
Alistair Nichol,Craig French,Lorraine Little,Samir Haddad,Jeffrey J. Presneill,Jeffrey J. Presneill,Jeffrey J. Presneill,Yaseen M. Arabi,Yaseen M. Arabi,Michael Bailey,D. James Cooper,Jacques Duranteau,Olivier Huet,Anne Mak,Colin McArthur,Colin McArthur,Ville Pettilä,Ville Pettilä,Markus B. Skrifvars,Shirley Vallance,Dinesh Varma,Judy Wills,Rinaldo Bellomo,Rinaldo Bellomo,Rinaldo Bellomo +24 more
TL;DR: Following moderate or severe traumatic brain injury, erythropoietin did not reduce the number of patients with severe neurological dysfunction (GOS-E level 1-4) or increase the incidence of deep venous thrombosis of the lower limbs.
Journal ArticleDOI
Energy-Dense versus Routine Enteral Nutrition in the Critically Ill.
Marianne J. Chapman,Sandra L. Peake,Rinaldo Bellomo,Andrew Davies,Adam M. Deane,Michael Horowitz,Sally Hurford,Kylie Lange,Lorraine Little,Diane Mackle,Stephanie N. O'Connor,Jeffrey J. Presneill,Emma J. Ridley,Patricia Williams,Paul J Young +14 more
TL;DR: In patients undergoing mechanical ventilation, the rate of survival at 90 days associated with the use of an energy‐dense formulation for enteral delivery of nutrition was not higher than that with routine enteral nutrition.
Journal ArticleDOI
Venous thromboembolic events in critically ill traumatic brain injury patients
Markus B. Skrifvars,Markus B. Skrifvars,Michael Bailey,Jeffrey J. Presneill,Jeffrey J. Presneill,Craig French,Alistair Nichol,Alistair Nichol,Lorraine Little,Jacques Duranteau,Olivier Huet,Samir Haddad,Yaseen M. Arabi,Colin McArthur,D. James Cooper,Rinaldo Bellomo +15 more
TL;DR: Despite mechanical and pharmacological prophylaxis, VTE occurs in one out of every five patients with TBI treated in the ICU, and the development of VTE was not associated with excess mortality.
Journal ArticleDOI
Outcomes Six Months after Delivering 100% or 70% of Enteral Calorie Requirements during Critical Illness (TARGET). A Randomized Controlled Trial.
Adam M. Deane,Lorraine Little,Rinaldo Bellomo,Marianne J. Chapman,Andrew Ross Davies,Suzie Ferrie,Michael Horowitz,Sally Hurford,Kylie Lange,Edward Litton,Diane Mackle,Stephanie N. O'Connor,Jane Parker,Sandra L. Peake,Jeffrey J. Presneill,Emma J. Ridley,Vanessa Singh,Frank van Haren,Patricia Williams,Paul J Young,Theodore J. Iwashyna +20 more
TL;DR: The delivery of approximately 100% compared to 70% of recommended calorie intake during critical illness does not improve quality of life, or functional outcomes, or increase the number of survivors six months later.
Journal ArticleDOI
Erythropoietin Does Not Alter Serum Profiles of Neuronal and Axonal Biomarkers After Traumatic Brain Injury: Findings From the Australian EPO-TBI Clinical Trial.
Sarah C. Hellewell,Stefania Mondello,Alison Conquest,Gerry Shaw,Irina Madorsky,Jay V. Deng,Lorraine Little,Firas Kobeissy,Nicole Bye,Rinaldo Bellomo,David James Cooper,David James Cooper,Shirley Vallance,Jasmine Board,Maria Cristina Morganti-Kossmann,Maria Cristina Morganti-Kossmann +15 more
TL;DR: Serum ubiquitin carboxy-terminal hydrolase L1 and phosphorylated neurofilament heavy-chain increase after traumatic brain injury reflecting early neuronal and progressive axonal injury and Pharmacokinetics of erythropoietin suggest that the dose given was possibly too low to exert neuroprotection.
