Journal ArticleDOI
Requirement of Hippocampal Neurogenesis for the Behavioral Effects of Antidepressants
Luca Santarelli,Michael Saxe,Cornelius Gross,Alexandre Surget,Fortunato Battaglia,Stephanie C. Dulawa,Noelia V. Weisstaub,James T. Lee,Ronald S. Duman,Ottavio Arancio,Catherine Belzung,René Hen +11 more
TL;DR: It is shown that disrupting antidepressant-induced neurogenesis blocks behavioral responses to antidepressants, suggesting that the behavioral effects of chronic antidepressants may be mediated by the stimulation of neuroGenesis in the hippocampus.
Journal ArticleDOI
Ablation of hippocampal neurogenesis impairs contextual fear conditioning and synaptic plasticity in the dentate gyrus
Michael Saxe,Fortunato Battaglia,Jingwen Wang,Gaël Malleret,Denis J. David,James E. Monckton,A. Denise R. Garcia,Michael V. Sofroniew,Eric R. Kandel,Luca Santarelli,René Hen,Michael R. Drew +11 more
TL;DR: The findings show that adult-born neurons make a distinct contribution to some but not all hippocampal functions and show that new hippocampal neurons can be preferentially recruited over mature granule cells in vitro and may provide a framework for how this small cell population can influence behavior.
Journal ArticleDOI
Serotonin1A receptor acts during development to establish normal anxiety-like behaviour in the adult.
Cornelius Gross,Xiaoxi Zhuang,Xiaoxi Zhuang,Kimberly L. Stark,Sylvie Ramboz,Ronald Oosting,Lynn G. Kirby,Luca Santarelli,Sheryl G. Beck,René Hen +9 more
TL;DR: Findings show that postnatal developmental processes help to establish adult anxiety-like behaviour, and the normal role of the serotonin1A receptor during development may be different from its function when this receptor is activated by therapeutic intervention in adulthood.
Journal ArticleDOI
Antidepressant-Induced Neurogenesis in the Hippocampus of Adult Nonhuman Primates
Tarique D. Perera,Jeremy D. Coplan,Sarah H. Lisanby,Cecilia M. Lipira,Mohamed Arif,Cristina Carpio,Gila Spitzer,Luca Santarelli,Bruce Scharf,René Hen,Gorazd Rosoklija,Harold A. Sackeim,Andrew J. Dwork +12 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that ECS is capable of inducing neurogenesis in the nonhuman primate hippocampus and supports the possibility that antidepressant interventions produce similar alterations in the human brain.
Journal ArticleDOI
Hippocampal neurogenesis is not required for behavioral effects of environmental enrichment
Dar Meshi,Michael R. Drew,Michael Saxe,Mark S. Ansorge,Denis J. David,Luca Santarelli,Chariklia Malapani,Holly Moore,René Hen +8 more
TL;DR: It is reported that environmental enrichment alters behavior in mice regardless of their hippocampal neurogenic capability, providing evidence that the newborn cells do not mediate these effects of enrichment.
