Journal ArticleDOI
Chemical ecology of tannins and other phenolics: we need a change in approach
TL;DR: A clear but detailed view of the chemical ecology of tannins and the methodology used to study them is given, and a new method to estimate the oxidative activity of all types of tANNins and other phenolics that might cause oxidative stress to herbivores is introduced.
Journal ArticleDOI
Seasonal variation in the content of hydrolyzable tannins, flavonoid glycosides, and proanthocyanidins in oak leaves.
Juha-Pekka Salminen,Tomas Roslin,Maarit Karonen,Jari Sinkkonen,Kalevi Pihlaja,Pertti Pulkkinen +5 more
TL;DR: A large variation in temporal trends among compounds, and a generally weak correlation between the concentration of any individual compound and the total concentration of phenolics, as quantified by the Folin–Ciocalteau method, leads us to caution against the uncritical use of summary quantifications of composite phenolic fractions in ecological studies.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effect of plant phenolics on protein and lipid oxidation in cooked pork meat patties.
TL;DR: It was shown that rapeseed and pine bark were excellent antioxidants toward protein oxidation (inhibitions between 42 and 64%).
Journal ArticleDOI
Benefits of Condensed Tannins in Forage Legumes Fed to Ruminants: Importance of Structure, Concentration, and Diet Composition

TL;DR: This review covers recent results from multidisciplinary research on sainfoin (Onobrychis Mill.) and provides an overview of current developments with several other tanniniferous forages.
Journal ArticleDOI
Preclinical evaluation of rapeseed, raspberry, and pine bark phenolics for health related effects.
Satu Vuorela,Kari Kreander,Maarit Karonen,Riina Nieminen,Mari Hämäläinen,Anna Galkin,Leena Laitinen,Juha-Pekka Salminen,Eeva Moilanen,Kalevi Pihlaja,Heikki Vuorela,Pia Vuorela,Marina Heinonen +12 more
TL;DR: Rapeseed, raspberry, and pine bark are promising bioactive sources of plant phenolics selected from among ca.
