Use of amphiphilic triblock copolymers to direct the organization of polymerizing silica species has resulted in the preparation of well-ordered hexagonal mesoporous silica structures (SBA-15) with uniform pore sizes up to approximately 300 angstroms. The SBA-15 materials are synthesized in acidic media to produce highly ordered, two-dimensional hexagonal (space group p6mm) silica-block copolymer mesophases. Calcination at 500°C gives porous structures with unusually large interlattice d spacings of 74.5 to 320 angstroms between the (100) planes, pore sizes from 46 to 300 angstroms, pore volume fractions up to 0.85, and silica wall thicknesses of 31 to 64 angstroms. SBA-15 can be readily prepared over a wide range of uniform pore sizes and pore wall thicknesses at low temperature (35° to 80°C), using a variety of poly(alkylene oxide) triblock copolymers and by the addition of cosolvent organic molecules. The block copolymer species can be recovered for reuse by solvent extraction with ethanol or removed by heating at 140°C for 3 hours, in both cases, yielding a product that is thermally stable in boiling water.

Triblock copolymer syntheses of mesoporous silica with periodic 50 to 300 angstrom pores

One of the most pervasive problems afflicting people throughout the world is inadequate access to clean water and sanitation. Problems with water are expected to grow worse in the coming decades, with water scarcity occurring globally, even in regions currently considered water-rich. Addressing these problems calls out for a tremendous amount of research to be conducted to identify robust new methods of purifying water at lower cost and with less energy, while at the same time minimizing the use of chemicals and impact on the environment. Here we highlight some of the science and technology being developed to improve the disinfection and decontamination of water, as well as efforts to increase water supplies through the safe re-use of wastewater and efficient desalination of sea and brackish water.

Science and technology for water purification in the coming decades

A family of highly ordered mesoporous (20−300 A) silica structures have been synthesized by the use of commercially available nonionic alkyl poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) oligomeric surfactants and poly(alkylene oxide) block copolymers in acid media. Periodic arrangements of mescoscopically ordered pores with cubic Im3m, cubic Pm3m (or others), 3-d hexagonal (P63/mmc), 2-d hexagonal (p6mm), and lamellar (Lα) symmetries have been prepared. Under acidic conditions at room temperature, the nonionic oligomeric surfactants frequently form cubic or 3-d hexagonal mesoporous silica structures, while the nonionic triblock copolymers tend to form hexagonal (p6mm) mesoporous silica structures. Bottom-up Approach toward Titanosilicate Mesoporous Pillared Planar Nanochannels for Nanofluidic Applications

A kinetic study of the heterogeneous catalytic hydrogenation of model polystyrenes (PS) using a catalyst comprised of Pt on a wide-pore silica support was performed. The effect of molecular weight on the initial rate of hydrogenation, r0, was investigated under conditions where mass transfer limitations were minimized. The r0 values for a series of model polystyrenes ranging in molecular weight from 1.5 to 276 kg/mol were measured by monitoring hydrogen uptake with a digital mass flow controller. The initial rate of hydrogenation was found to be inversely proportional to PS molecular weight. For molecular weights up to 102 kg/mol, r0 scaled with the number-average degree of polymerization, Xn, to the −0.15 power. The two highest molecular weight samples, 190 and 276 kg/mol, exhibited significantly slower initial rates of hydrogenation and did not follow this trend. Molecular Weight Effects in the Hydrogenation of Model Polystyrenes Using Platinum Supported on Wide-Pore Silica

We explored the use of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to evaluate the crystallinity of griseofulvin (GF)/hydroxypropyl methylcellulose acetate succinate (HPMCAS) solid dispersions. TEM, which provides both real-space images and electron diffraction patterns, was used to unambiguously identify GF crystals in spray dried GF. Using TEM, we were also able to detect GF crystals in a physical mixture of spray dried GF particles and spray dried HPMCAS particles with an overall crystallinity of ∼3 vol %, below the practical lower limit of detection for laboratory-scale wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS). Using TEM and WAXS, we did not find crystals in GF/HPMCAS solid dispersions with GF loadings of 5, 10, and 50 wt %. However, we detected GF crystals in annealed 5 wt % GF solid dispersion using TEM, whereas we did not detect crystals using in situ WAXS and modulated differential scanning calorimetry, thereby establishing the superior crystal detection sensitivity of TEM. Detection of pharmaceutical drug crystallites in solid dispersions by transmission electron microscopy.

Melt chain dimensions of two polylactide samples were measured using small-angle neutron scattering. Three polylactides were synthesized:  a deuterated polylactide containing 26% R-stereocenters (d-PLA-26), a hydrogenous polylactide with an R-content similar to the deuterated polylactide (PLA-28), and a hydrogenous polylactide that contained no R-stereocenters (PLA-0). The hydrogenous polylactides were each solution blended with the d-PLA-26 at a volume fraction of 0.2 for the deuterated polymer, and the melt chain dimensions of these polymers were determined. Small-angle neutron scattering experiments were performed at 30 °C for the d-PLA-26/PLA-28 blend and at 200 °C for both the d-PLA-26/PLA-28 and d-PLA-26/PLA-0 blends. Using three analysis methods, the average values for the statistical segment lengths, based on a C6 repeat unit, were found to be 10.0 ± 0.2 A for the PLA-28 at 30 °C, 8.9 ± 0.2 A for the PLA-28 at 200 °C, and 9.9 ± 0.4 A for the PLA-0 at 200 °C.
