The 15-Country Collaborative Study of Cancer Risk among Radiation Workers in the Nuclear Industry: Estimates of Radiation-Related Cancer Risks
Elisabeth Cardis,Martine Vrijheid,Maria Blettner,Ethel S. Gilbert,Matti Hakama,Catherine Hill,Geoffrey R. Howe,John M. Kaldor,Colin R. Muirhead,Mary K. Schubauer-Berigan,T. Yoshimura,F. Bermann,G. Richardson,Fernando Rodríguez-Artalejo,Agnès Rogel,H. Tardy,M. Telle-Lamberton,I. Turai,M. Usel,K. Veress +52 more
TL;DR: This is the largest analytical epidemiological study of the effects of low-dose protracted exposures to ionizing radiation to date, and shows a strong healthy worker survivor effect in these cohorts.
Journal ArticleDOI
Risk of cancer after low doses of ionising radiation: retrospective cohort study in 15 countries
Elisabeth Cardis,Martine Vrijheid,Maria Blettner,Ethel S. Gilbert,Matti Hakama,Catherine Hill,Geoffrey R. Howe,John M. Kaldor,Colin R. Muirhead,Mary K. Schubauer-Berigan,T. Yoshimura,F. Bermann,G. Richardson,Fernando Rodríguez-Artalejo,Agnès Rogel,H. Tardy,M. Telle-Lamberton,I. Turai,M. Usel,K. Veress +51 more
TL;DR: Estimates of risk of cancer after protracted low doses of ionising radiation after nuclear workers in the largest study of nuclear workers ever conducted are higher than, but statistically compatible with, the risk estimates used for current radiation protection standards.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cellular Phones, Cordless Phones, and the Risks of Glioma and Meningioma (Interphone Study Group, Germany)
Joachim Schüz,Eva Böhler,Gabriele Berg,Brigitte Schlehofer,Iris Hettinger,Klaus Schlaefer,Jürgen Wahrendorf,Katharina Kunna-Grass,Maria Blettner +8 more
TL;DR: The widespread use of cellular telephones has generated concern about possible adverse health effects, particularly brain tumors, but in this population-based case-control study carried out in three regions of Germany, no overall increased risk of glioma or meningioma was observed among these cellular phone users.
Journal ArticleDOI
Sun exposure and number of nevi in 5- to 6-year-old European children.
Madeleine Dulon,Michael Weichenthal,Maria Blettner,Marianne Breitbart,Melanie Hetzer,Rüdiger Greinert,Cornelia Baumgardt-Elms,Eckard W. Breitbart +7 more
TL;DR: It is found that subjects with a reported history of increased sun exposure, for example, painful sunburns, and an increased number of holidays in foreign countries with a sunny climate had significantly higher nevus counts than individuals without these characteristics.
Journal ArticleDOI
Mortality from Cancer and Other Causes among Airline Cabin Attendants in Europe: A Collaborative Cohort Study in Eight Countries
Hajo Zeeb,Maria Blettner,Ingo Langner,Gaël P. Hammer,Terri J. Ballard,Mariano Santaquilani,Maryanne Gundestrup,Hans H. Storm,Tor Haldorsen,Ulf Tveten,Niklas Hammar,Annette Linnersjö,Emmanouel Velonakis,Anastasia Tzonou,Anssi Auvinen,Anssi Auvinen,Eero Pukkala,Vilhjalmur Rafnsson,Jon Hrafnkelsson +18 more
TL;DR: There was no increase in mortality that could be attributed to cosmic radiation or other occupational exposures to any substantial extent among airline cabin crew in Europe, and the risk of skin cancer among male crew members requires further attention.
