Journal ArticleDOI
PCB pollution continues to impact populations of orcas and other dolphins in European waters
Paul Jepson,Rob Deaville,Jonathan L. Barber,Alex Aguilar,Asunción Borrell,Sinéad Murphy,John Barry,Andrew Brownlow,James Barnett,Simon Berrow,Andrew A. Cunningham,Nicholas J. Davison,Mariel ten Doeschate,Ruth Esteban,Marisa Ferreira,Andrew D. Foote,Tilen Genov,Joan Giménez,Jan Loveridge,Ángela Llavona,Vidal Martín,David Maxwell,Alexandra Papachlimitzou,Rod Penrose,Matthew W. Perkins,Brian D. Smith,Renaud de Stephanis,Nick Tregenza,Philippe Verborgh,Antonio Fernández,Robin J. Law,Robin J. Law +31 more
TL;DR: It is shown that several cetacean species have very high mean blubber PCB concentrations likely to cause population declines and suppress population recovery, and some locations are global PCB “hotspots” for marine mammals.
Journal ArticleDOI
What can cetacean stranding records tell us? A study of UK and Irish cetacean diversity over the past 100 years
Ellen J Coombs,Ellen J Coombs,Rob Deaville,Richard Sabin,Louise Allan,Mick O'Connell,Simon Berrow,Brian D. Smith,Andrew Brownlow,Mariel ten Doeschate,Rod Penrose,Ruth M. Williams,Matthew W. Perkins,Paul Jepson,Natalie Cooper +14 more
TL;DR: Coombs et al. as mentioned in this paper conducted a study of UK and Irish cetacean diversity over the past 100 years, which has been published in final form at doi:10.1111/mms.12610.
Journal ArticleDOI
Levels of Polychlorinated Biphenyls Are Still Associated with Toxic Effects in Harbor Porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) Despite Having Fallen below Proposed Toxicity Thresholds
Rosie S. Williams,Rosie S. Williams,Mariel ten Doeschate,David J. Curnick,Andrew Brownlow,Jonathan L. Barber,Nicholas J. Davison,Robert Deaville,Matthew W. Perkins,Paul Jepson,Susan Jobling +10 more
TL;DR: It is shown, using generalized additive models and tissue samples of 814 U.K.-stranded harbor porpoises collected between 1990 and 2017, that mean blubber PCB concentrations have fallen below the proposed thresholds for toxic effects, but it is found they are still associated with increased rates of infectious disease mortality.
Journal ArticleDOI
Beached bachelors: an extensive study on the largest recorded sperm whale Physeter macrocephalus mortality event in the North Sea
Lonneke L. IJsseldijk,Abbo van Neer,Rob Deaville,Lineke Begeman,Marco W. G. van de Bildt,Judith M. A. van den Brand,Judith M. A. van den Brand,Andrew Brownlow,Richard Czeck,Willy Dabin,Mariel ten Doeschate,Vanessa Herder,Helena Herr,Jooske IJzer,Thierry Jauniaux,Lasse Fast Jensen,Paul Jepson,Wendy K Jo,Jan Lakemeyer,Kristina Lehnert,Mardik F. Leopold,Albert D. M. E. Osterhaus,Matthew W. Perkins,Uwe Piatkowski,Ellen Prenger-Berninghoff,Ralf Pund,Peter Wohlsein,Andrea Gröne,Ursula Siebert +28 more
TL;DR: The reasons for sperm whales to enter the southern North Sea are the result of complex interactions of extrinsic environmental factors, and it is concluded that these large mortality events seldom have a single ultimate cause.
Journal ArticleDOI
Spatiotemporal mortality and demographic trends in a small cetacean: Strandings to inform conservation management
Lonneke L. IJsseldijk,Mariel ten Doeschate,Mariel ten Doeschate,Andrew Brownlow,Nicholas J. Davison,Rob Deaville,Anders Galatius,Anita Gilles,Jan Haelters,Paul Jepson,Guido O. Keijl,Carl Chr. Kinze,Morten Tange Olsen,Ursula Siebert,Charlotte Bie Thøstesen,Jan van den Broek,Andrea Gröne,Hans Heesterbeek +17 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors analyzed stranding records (n = 16,181) from 1990 to 2017 and demonstrate a strong heterogeneous seasonal pattern of strandings throughout the North Sea, indicative of season-specific distribution or habitat use, and season specific mortality.
