Progressive changes in schizophrenia: do they exist and what do they mean?
TL;DR: Evidence for progressive changes in schizophrenia is reviewed, followed by evidence from structural brain studies that suggests that schizophrenia is a brain disorder, and it is proposed that the two are not mutually exclusive, but instead likely reflect a "two-hit" model for some subtypes of schizophrenia.
Journal ArticleDOI
Frequency and pattern of childhood symptom onset reported by first episode schizophrenia and clinical high risk youth
Kristen A. Woodberry,Kristen A. Woodberry,Rachael A. Serur,Sean B. Hallinan,Raquelle I. Mesholam-Gately,Raquelle I. Mesholam-Gately,Anthony J. Giuliano,Joanne Wojcik,Joanne Wojcik,Matcheri S. Keshavan,Matcheri S. Keshavan,Jean A. Frazier,Jill M. Goldstein,Martha E. Shenton,Robert W. McCarley,Larry J. Seidman,Larry J. Seidman +16 more
TL;DR: Childhood-onset of initial psychotic-like symptoms may be more common than previous research has suggested and improved characterization of these symptoms and a focus on their predictive value for subsequent schizophrenia and other major psychoses are needed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Impaired white matter connectivity between regions containing mirror neurons, and relationship to negative symptoms and social cognition, in patients with first-episode schizophrenia.
Yukiko Saito,Yukiko Saito,Marek Kubicki,Marek Kubicki,Inga K. Koerte,Inga K. Koerte,Tatsui Otsuka,Yogesh Rathi,Ofer Pasternak,Sylvain Bouix,Ryan Eckbo,Zora Kikinis,Christian Clemm von Hohenberg,Christian Clemm von Hohenberg,Tomohide Roppongi,Elisabetta C. del Re,Takeshi Asami,Sang Hyuk Lee,Sarina Karmacharya,Raquelle I. Mesholam-Gately,Larry J. Seidman,Larry J. Seidman,James J. Levitt,Robert W. McCarley,Martha E. Shenton,Margaret A. Niznikiewicz +25 more
TL;DR: Disruption of white mater microstructure within the white matter tracts subserving brain regions containing mirror neurons is demonstrated and it is shown that such structural disruptions might impact negative symptoms and contribute to the inability to feel intimacy in first episode schizophrenia.
Journal ArticleDOI
Lateralized P3 deficit in schizotypal personality disorder.
Margaret A. Niznikiewicz,Margaret A. Niznikiewicz,Martina M. Voglmaier,Martha E. Shenton,Chandlee C. Dickey,Larry J. Seidman,E. Teh,E. Teh,Richard Rhoads,Richard Rhoads,Robert W. McCarley +10 more
TL;DR: These results are similar to the ones in previous work and support the presence of a left-lateralized P3 deficit in SPD.
Journal ArticleDOI
Correlations of premorbid adjustment in schizophrenia with auditory event-related potential and neuropsychological abnormalities.
TL;DR: Premorbid adjustment may predict the severity of specific neurophysiological and neuropsychological abnormalities in schizophrenia.
