The Spitzer Space Telescope, NASA's Great Observatory for infrared astronomy, was launched 2003 August 25 and is returning excellent scientific data from its Earth-trailing solar orbit. Spitzer combines the intrinsic sensitivity achievable with a cryogenic telescope in space with the great imaging and spectroscopic power of modern detector arrays to provide the user community with huge gains in capability for exploration of the cosmos in the infrared. The observatory systems are largely performing as expected, and the projected cryogenic lifetime is in excess of 5 years. This paper summarizes the on-orbit scientific, technical, and operational performance of Spitzer. Subsequent papers in this special issue describe the Spitzer instruments in detail and highlight many of the exciting scientific results obtained during the first 6 months of the Spitzer mission.

The Spitzer Space Telescope mission

We present a sample of low-resolution 5-38 μm Spitzer IRS spectra of the inner few square kiloparsecs of 59 nearby galaxies spanning a large range of star formation properties. A robust method for decomposing mid-infrared galaxy spectra is described and used to explore the behavior of PAH emission and the prevalence of silicate dust extinction. Evidence for silicate extinction is found in ~1/8 of the sample, at strengths that indicate that most normal galaxies undergo A_V ≲ 3 mag averaged over their centers. The contribution of PAH emission to the total infrared power is found to peak near 10% and extend up to ~20% and is suppressed at metallicities Z ≲ Z_☉/4, as well as in low-luminosity AGN environments. Strong interband PAH feature strength variations (2-5 times) are observed, with the presence of a weak AGN and, to a lesser degree, increasing metallicity shifting power to the longer wavelength bands. A peculiar PAH emission spectrum with markedly diminished 5-8 μm features arises among the sample solely in systems with relatively hard radiation fields harboring low-luminosity AGNs. The AGNs may modify the emitting grain distribution and provide the direct excitation source of the unusual PAH emission, which cautions against using absolute PAH strength to estimate star formation rates in systems harboring active nuclei. Alternatively, the low star formation intensity often associated with weak AGNs may affect the spectrum. The effect of variations in the mid-infrared spectrum on broadband infrared surveys is modeled and points to more than a factor of 2 uncertainty in results that assume a fixed PAH emission spectrum, for redshifts z = 0-2.5.

The mid-infrared spectrum of star-forming galaxies: Global properties of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon emission

We analyze a sample of ~2600 Spitzer MIPS 24 μm sources brighter than ~80 μJy and located in the Chandra Deep Field-South to characterize the evolution of the comoving infrared (IR) energy density of the universe up to z ~ 1. Using published ancillary optical data, we first obtain a nearly complete redshift determination for the 24 μm objects associated with R 24 mag counterparts at z 1. These sources represent ~55%-60% of the total MIPS 24 μm population with f24 μm 80 μJy, the rest of the sample likely lying at higher redshifts. We then determine an estimate of their total IR luminosities using various libraries of IR spectral energy distributions. We find that the 24 μm population at 0.5 z 1 is dominated by "luminous infrared galaxies" (i.e., 1011 L☉ ≤ LIR ≤ 1012 L☉), the counterparts of which appear to be also luminous at optical wavelengths and tend to be more massive than the majority of optically selected galaxies. A significant number of fainter sources (5 × 1010 L☉ LIR ≤ 1011 L☉) are also detected at similar distances. We finally derive 15 μm and total IR luminosity functions (LFs) up to z ~ 1. In agreement with the previous results from the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) and SCUBA and as expected from the MIPS source number counts, we find very strong evolution of the contribution of the IR-selected population with look-back time. Pure evolution in density is firmly excluded by the data, but we find considerable degeneracy between strict evolution in luminosity and a combination of increases in both density and luminosity [L ∝ (1 + z), ∝ (1 + z)]. A significant steepening of the faint-end slope of the IR luminosity function is also unlikely, as it would overproduce the faint 24 μm source number counts. Our results imply that the comoving IR energy density of the universe evolves as (1 + z)3.9±0.4 up to z ~ 1 and that galaxies luminous in the infrared (i.e., LIR ≥ 1011 L☉) are responsible for 70% ± 15% of this energy density at z ~ 1. Taking into account the contribution of the UV luminosity evolving as (1 + z)~2.5, we infer that these IR-luminous sources dominate the star-forming activity beyond z ~ 0.7. The uncertainties affecting these conclusions are largely dominated by the errors in the k-corrections used to convert 24 μm fluxes into luminosities.

Infrared Luminosity Functions from the Chandra Deep Field-South: The Spitzer View on the History of Dusty Star Formation at 0 ≲ z ≲ 1*

In recent decades, a number of molecules and diverse dust features have been identified by astronomical observations in various environments. Most of the dust that determines the physical and chemical characteristics of the interstellar medium is formed in the outflows of asymptotic giant branch stars and is further processed when these objects become planetary nebulae. We studied the environment of Tc 1, a peculiar planetary nebula whose infrared spectrum shows emission from cold and neutral C60 and C70. The two molecules amount to a few percent of the available cosmic carbon in this region. This finding indicates that if the conditions are right, fullerenes can and do form efficiently in space.

Detection of C60 and C70 in a Young Planetary Nebula

We show that measures of star formation rates (SFRs) for infrared galaxies using either single-band 24 μm or extinction-corrected Paα luminosities are consistent in the total infrared luminosity = L(TIR) ~ 1010 L ☉ range. MIPS 24 μm photometry can yield SFRs accurately from this luminosity upward: SFR(M ☉ yr–1) = 7.8 × 10–10 L(24 μm, L ☉) from L(TIR) = 5× 109 L ☉ to 1011 L ☉ and SFR = 7.8 × 10–10 L(24 μm, L ☉)(7.76 × 10–11 L(24))0.048 for higher L(TIR). For galaxies with L(TIR) ≥ 1010 L ☉, these new expressions should provide SFRs to within 0.2 dex. For L(TIR) ≥ 1011 L ☉, we find that the SFR of infrared galaxies is significantly underestimated using extinction-corrected Paα (and presumably using any other optical or near-infrared recombination lines). As a part of this work, we constructed spectral energy distribution templates for eleven luminous and ultraluminous purely star forming infrared galaxies and over the spectral range 0.4 μm to 30 cm. We use these templates and the SINGS data to construct average templates from 5 μm to 30 cm for infrared galaxies with L(TIR) = 5× 109 to 1013 L ☉. All of these templates are made available online.

The infrared spectrograph on the Spitzer Space Telescope

The IR Spectrograph (IRS) will provide the Space IR Telescope Facility (SIRTF) with low and moderate-spectral resolution spectroscopic capabilities from 4 to 40 microns. The IRS is composed of four separate modules, with two of the modules providing R approximately 50 spectral resolution over 4 to 40 microns and two modules providing R approximately 600 spectral resolution over 10 to 37 microns. Each module has its own entrance slit in the focal plane and the IRS instrument has no moving parts. The low-resolution modules employ long slit designs that allow both spectral and 1D spatial information to be acquired simultaneously on the same detector array. Two small imaging sub-arrays in one of the low-resolution modules will also allow IR objects with poorly known positions to be accurately placed into any of the IRS modules' entrance slits. The high-resolution modules use a cross-dispersed echelle design that gives both spectral and limited spatial measurements on the same detector array. The one-sigma continuum sensitivity requirements for the IRS low-resolution modules' one-sigma line sensitivity requirements are 6.0 by 10 -23 W- cm -2 in the same integration time. Internal calibration sources allow the IRS to perform self monitoring of detector sensitivity changes. Careful thermal design allows all four modules to be powered up simultaneously and still input less than 4 mW total power into the SIRTF liquid helium bath. The optical, mechanical, thermal, and electrical design of the IRS is discussed, as is the IRS on- orbit operational concept.
