Journal ArticleDOI
Reduction of maternal-infant transmission of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 with zidovudine treatment. Pediatric AIDS Clinical Trials Group Protocol 076 Study Group.
Edward M. Connor,Rhoda S. Sperling,Richard D. Gelber,Pavel Kiselev,Gwendolyn B. Scott,Mary Jo O'Sullivan,Russell Vandyke,Mohammed Bey,William T. Shearer,Robert L. Jacobson,Eleanor Jimenez,Edward O’neill,Brigitte Bazin,Jean François Delfraissy,Mary Culnane,Robert W. Coombs,Mary Elkins,Jack Moye,Pamela Stratton,James Balsley +19 more
TL;DR: In pregnant women with mildly symptomatic HIV disease and no prior treatment with antiretroviral drugs during the pregnancy, a regimen consisting of zidovudine given ante partum and intra partum to the mother and to the newborn for six weeks reduced the risk of maternal-infant HIV transmission by approximately two thirds.

TL;DR: It was shown that AZT decreased the maternal-infant transmission of HIV and helped decrease infant mortality due to the viral infection.
Journal ArticleDOI
Amitriptyline relieves diabetic neuropathy pain in patients with normal or depressed mood
Mitchell B. Max,Mary Culnane,Susan C. Schafer,Richard H. Gracely,D. J. Walther,B. Smoller,Ronald Dubner +6 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that amitriptyline relieves pain in diabetic neuropathy; this effect is independent of mood elevation.
Journal ArticleDOI
A prospective randomized trial of regional versus systemic continuous 5-fluorodeoxyuridine chemotherapy in the treatment of colorectal liver metastases.
Alfred E. Chang,Philip D. Schneider,Paul H. Sugarbaker,Colleen Simpson,Mary Culnane,Seth M. Steinberg +5 more
TL;DR: A small gain in survival seen in a select subgroup of patients with negative hepatic nodes appeared to be offset by the toxicity of I.A.V. FUDR, which allowed more drug delivery to liver tumors, which resulted in increased tumor responses when compared with use of systemic therapy.
Journal ArticleDOI
Amitriptyline, but not lorazepam, relieves postherpetic neuralgia
TL;DR: Greater relief was associated with higher amitriptyline doses, up to the maxiumum dose of 150 mg/d, and with higher serum tricyclic levels, and in four patients with postherpetic neuralgia.
