Phagocytosis and H2O2 induce catalase and metallothionein gene expression in human retinal pigment epithelial cells.
TL;DR: The generation of H2O2 during phagocytosis may act as an intracellular signal in retinal pigment epithelial cells that leads to increased levels of key antioxidant enzymes and other proteins important for protecting the cells from oxidative damage.
Journal ArticleDOI
Evaluation of Oxidative Processes in Human Pigment Epithelial Cells Associated with Retinal Outer Segment Phagocytosis
TL;DR: ROS phagocytosis subjects RPE cells to an oxidative event on the same order of magnitude as measured in a macrophage, and the enzyme catalase appears to be essential in protecting the RPE cell against reactive oxygen species produced during phagcytosis.
Journal ArticleDOI
Molecular and bioenergetic differences between cells with African versus European inherited mitochondrial DNA haplogroups: implications for population susceptibility to diseases.
M. Cristina Kenney,Marilyn Chwa,Shari R. Atilano,Payam Falatoonzadeh,Claudio Ramirez,Deepika Malik,Mohamed Tarek,Javier Caceres del Carpio,Anthony B. Nesburn,David S. Boyer,Baruch D. Kuppermann,Marquis P. Vawter,S. Michal Jazwinski,Michael V. Miceli,Douglas C. Wallace,Nitin Udar +15 more
TL;DR: The hypothesis that mtDNA haplogroups representing populations from different geographic origins may play a role in differential susceptibilities to diseases is supported.
Journal ArticleDOI
Experimental Transplantation of Human Retinal Pigment Epithelial Cells on Collagen Substrates
Nitul S. Bhatt,David A. Newsome,Thomas Fenech,Thomas P. Hessburg,James G. Diamond,Michael V. Miceli,Kenneth E. Kratz,Peter D. Oliver +7 more
TL;DR: The results demonstrated that, in eyes receiving the noncross-linked collagen support, a layer of pigmented donor retinal pigment epithelium was visible within the subretinal space, with a normal-appearing retina and no evidence of proliferative vitreoretinopathy or graft rejection.
Journal ArticleDOI
Zinc protects against oxidative damage in cultured human retinal pigment epithelial cells.
TL;DR: Zinc protected cultured RPE from the toxicity of H2O2 and paraquat, and results show RPE cells cultured in zinc-reduced medium are more susceptible to oxidative insult.
