Journal ArticleDOI

Major viral impact on the functioning of benthic deep-sea ecosystems.

TL;DR: It is reported that viral production in deep-sea benthic ecosystems worldwide is extremely high, and that viral infections are responsible for the abatement of 80% of prokaryotic heterotrophic production.
Journal ArticleDOI

Viral Production, Decay Rates, and Life Strategies along a Trophic Gradient in the North Adriatic Sea

TL;DR: This study investigated factors controlling the balance between viral production and decay along a trophic gradient in the north Adriatic basin, providing independent estimates of these variables and determining the relative importance of nanoflagellate grazing and viral life strategies.
Journal ArticleDOI

Viriobenthos in freshwater and marine sediments : a review

TL;DR: First results from a few studies using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis and especially from metagenomic analyses indicate, however, that viriobenthic assemblages are both highly diverse and distinct from the virioplankton.
Journal ArticleDOI

Prokaryote diversity and viral production in deep-sea sediments and seamounts

TL;DR: Investigation of microbial variables in the deep-sea sediments around two seamounts at 3000-m depth in the Tyrrhenian Sea and sediments located at the same depth, but not affected by the presence of the seamounted, found prokaryotic abundances significantly higher than those observed in non-seamount sediments and benthic viral production was about double.
