Diversity of KIR genes and their HLA-C ligands in Ugandan populations with historically varied malaria transmission intensity.
Stephen Tukwasibwe,James A. Traherne,Olympe Chazara,Jyothi Jayaraman,John Trowsdale,Ashley Moffett,Wei Jiang,Joaniter I. Nankabirwa,John Rek,Emmanuel Arinaitwe,Samuel L. Nsobya,Maxine Atuheirwe,Mubiru Frank,Anguzu Godwin,Prasanna Jagannathan,Stephen Cose,Moses R. Kamya,Grant Dorsey,Philip J. Rosenthal,Francesco Colucci,Francesco Colucci,Annettee Nakimuli +21 more
TL;DR: In this article, a high throughput multiplex quantitative real-time PCR method was used to determine whether genetic variation in KIR and HLA-C genes differ in Ugandan populations with historically varied malaria transmission intensity using more comprehensive genotyping approaches.
Journal ArticleDOI
Age-dependent changes in circulating Tfh cells influence development of functional malaria antibodies in children
Jo-Anne Chan,Jessica R. Loughland,L. de la Parte,Satomi Okano,Isaac Ssewanyana,Mayimuna Nalubega,Felistas Nankya,Kenneth Musinguzi,John Rek,Emmanuel Arinaitwe,Peta Tipping,Peter Bourke,Dean Andrew,Nicholas L Dooley,Arya SheelaNair,Bruce D. Wines,P. Mark Hogarth,James G. Beeson,Bryan Greenhouse,Grant Dorsey,Moses R. Kamya,Gunter Hartel,Gabriela Minigo,Margaret E. Feeney,Prasanna Jagannathan,Michelle J. Boyle +25 more
TL;DR: In this article , the authors used a large cross-sectional study of children residing in an area of high malaria transmission in Uganda to characterize T-follicular helper (Tfh) cells and functional antibodies to multiple parasites stages.
Journal ArticleDOI
Ugandan Medical Student Career Choices Relate to Foreign Funding Priorities
Nasser Kakembo,Martin Situma,Hannah Williamson,Phyllis Kisa,Moses R. Kamya,Doruk Ozgediz,John Sekabira,Tamara N. Fitzgerald,Tamara N. Fitzgerald +8 more
TL;DR: Career opportunities including surgical residencies must be prioritized and supported in sub-Saharan Africa in order to avoid “brain drain” and encourage students to pursue careers in surgery.
Journal ArticleDOI
Prophylaxis and treatment of malaria in HIV-infected populations
TL;DR: Antiretroviral protease inhibitors demonstrate in vitro antimalarial activity and these immune dysregulatory effects of HIV on malaria treatment outcomes may, however, be less important in children.
Journal ArticleDOI
Efficacy and safety of artemether-lumefantrine for the treatment of uncomplicated malaria in the setting of three different chemopreventive regimens
James Kapisi,Victor Bigira,Tamara D. Clark,Stephen Kinara,Florence Mwangwa,Jane Achan,Moses R. Kamya,Seyi Soremekun,Grant Dorsey +8 more
TL;DR: The risk of severe malaria was very low in this cohort of young children living in a high transmission setting and treatment of uncomplicated malaria with artemether-lumefantrine was safe and efficacious, with moderate protection against recurrent malaria among children assigned monthly DP.
