Journal ArticleDOI
Using multi-tracer inference to move beyond single-catchment ecohydrology
Benjamin W. Abbott,Viktor Baranov,Clara Mendoza-Lera,Myrto Nikolakopoulou,Astrid Harjung,Tamara Kolbe,Mukundh N. Balasubramanian,Timothy N. Vaessen,Francesco Ciocca,Audrey Campeau,Marcus B. Wallin,Paul Romeijn,Marta Antonelli,José Leonardo de Moraes Gonçalves,Thibault Datry,Anniet M. Laverman,Jean-Raynald de Dreuzy,David M. Hannah,Stefan Krause,Carolyn Oldham,Gilles Pinay +20 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors synthesize the history of hydrological and biogeochemical theory, summarize modern tracer methods, and discuss how improved understanding of flowpath, residence time, and bio-geochemical transformation can help ecohydrology move beyond description of site-specific heterogeneity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Enhancement of carbon and nitrogen removal by helophytes along subsurface water flowpaths receiving treated wastewater.
Miquel Ribot,Susana Bernal,Susana Bernal,Myrto Nikolakopoulou,Timothy N. Vaessen,Joaquín Cochero,Esperança Gacia,Albert Sorolla,Alba Argerich,Alba Argerich,Francesc Sabater,Manel Isnard,Eugènia Martí +12 more
TL;DR: Results highlight that helophytes can enhance DIN removal in streams receiving inputs from WWTP effluents; and thus, they can become a relevant bioremediation tool in WWTP-influenced streams, however, results also suggest that the quality of DOC from theWWTP effluent can influence the N removal capacity of these systems.
Journal ArticleDOI
Emergent Macrophyte Root Architecture Controls Subsurface Solute Transport
Myrto Nikolakopoulou,Alba Argerich,Alba Argerich,Jennifer D. Drummond,Esperança Gacia,Eugènia Martí,Albert Sorolla,Francesc Sabater +7 more
Journal ArticleDOI
The role of helophyte species on nitrogen and phosphorus retention from wastewater treatment plant effluents.
Esperança Gacia,Susana Bernal,Myrto Nikolakopoulou,Ester Carreras,Laura Morgado,Miquel Ribot,Manel Isnard,Albert Sorolla,Francesc Sabater,Eugènia Martí +9 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the potential of four helophyte species to reduce dissolved inorganic nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) from wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) effluents was evaluated.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effect of Three Emergent Macrophyte Species on Nutrient Retention in Aquatic Environments under Excess Nutrient Loading.
Myrto Nikolakopoulou,Alba Argerich,Susana Bernal,Esperança Gacia,Miquel Ribot,Eugènia Martí,Albert Sorolla,Francesc Sabater +7 more
TL;DR: Comparing nutrient retention among 12 artificial flumes fed with effluents from a wastewater treatment plant and subjected to four treatments showed a species-specific effect of macrophytes on nutrient retention and confirmed root-associated subsurface hydrological retention as a driving factor.
