Journal ArticleDOI
Using multi-tracer inference to move beyond single-catchment ecohydrology
Benjamin W. Abbott,Viktor Baranov,Clara Mendoza-Lera,Myrto Nikolakopoulou,Astrid Harjung,Tamara Kolbe,Mukundh N. Balasubramanian,Timothy N. Vaessen,Francesco Ciocca,Audrey Campeau,Marcus B. Wallin,Paul Romeijn,Marta Antonelli,José Leonardo de Moraes Gonçalves,Thibault Datry,Anniet M. Laverman,Jean-Raynald de Dreuzy,David M. Hannah,Stefan Krause,Carolyn Oldham,Gilles Pinay +20 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors synthesize the history of hydrological and biogeochemical theory, summarize modern tracer methods, and discuss how improved understanding of flowpath, residence time, and bio-geochemical transformation can help ecohydrology move beyond description of site-specific heterogeneity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Complex and nonlinear climate‐driven changes in freshwater insect communities over 42 years
Viktor Baranov,Viktor Baranov,Jonas Jourdan,Jonas Jourdan,Francesca Pilotto,Francesca Pilotto,Ruediger Wagner,Peter Haase,Peter Haase +8 more
TL;DR: In a nature reserve, climate change can lead to a significant decline in insect abundance and severe restructuring of communities, indicating that climate change has already altered biotic communities severely even in protected areas, where no other interacting stressors are present.
Journal ArticleDOI
Gathering at the top?: Environmental controls of microplastic uptake and biomagnification in freshwater food webs
Stefan Krause,Stefan Krause,Viktor Baranov,Holly A. Nel,Jennifer D. Drummond,Anna Kukkola,Timothy J. Hoellein,Gregory H. Sambrook Smith,Joerg Lewandowski,Berta Bonet,Aaron I. Packman,Jon P. Sadler,Valentyna Inshyna,Steve Allen,Deonie Allen,Laurent Simon,Florian Mermillod-Blondin,Iseult Lynch +17 more
TL;DR: This review provides a comprehensive synthesis of key research challenges in analysing the environmental fate and transport of microplastics in freshwater ecosystems, including the identification of hydrological, sedimentological and particle property controls on microplastic accumulation in aquatic ecosystems.
Journal ArticleDOI
Bioturbation enhances the aerobic respiration of lake sediments in warming lakes.
TL;DR: It is indicated that lake water temperature increases could significantly enhance lake sediment respiration, which allows us to better understand seasonal changes in lake respiration and carbon metabolism as well as the potential impacts of global warming.
Journal ArticleDOI
DNA metabarcoding reveals the complex and hidden responses of chironomids to multiple stressors
Arne J. Beermann,Vera M. A. Zizka,Vasco Elbrecht,Vasco Elbrecht,Viktor Baranov,Florian Leese +5 more
TL;DR: The results highlight the potential of DNA-based approaches when studying environmental impacts, especially for this ecologically important taxon and in the context of multiple stressors.
