Journal ArticleDOI
Differential effects of drugs targeting cancer stem cell (CSC) and non-CSC populations on lung primary tumors and metastasis.
Leyre Larzabal,Nefertiti El-Nikhely,Miriam Redrado,Werner Seeger,Rajkumar Savai,Alfonso Calvo +5 more
TL;DR: Results show that salinomycin targets ALDH+ lung CSCs, which has important therapeutic effects in vivo by reducing metastatic lesions, and paclitaxel (although reducing primary tumor growth) promotes the selection of AL DH+ cells that likely modify the lung microenvironment to foster metastasis.
Journal ArticleDOI
Lung cancer–associated pulmonary hypertension: Role of microenvironmental inflammation based on tumor cell–immune cell cross-talk
Soni Savai Pullamsetti,Soni Savai Pullamsetti,Baktybek Kojonazarov,Samantha Storn,Henning Gall,Ylia Salazar,Janine Wolf,Andreas Weigert,Nefertiti El-Nikhely,Hossein Ardeschir Ghofrani,Hossein Ardeschir Ghofrani,Gabriele A. Krombach,Ludger Fink,Stefan Gattenlöhner,Ulf R. Rapp,Ralph T. Schermuly,Friedrich Grimminger,Werner Seeger,Werner Seeger,Rajkumar Savai,Rajkumar Savai +20 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that lung cancer drives vascular remodeling in its microenvironment, resulting in the development of pulmonary hypertension, helping to explain the patients’ symptoms, and targeting inflammation in the microenvironment and PDE5 offers a potential therapeutic option.
Journal ArticleDOI
South-South entrepreneurial collaboration in health biotech
Halla Thorsteinsdóttir,Halla Thorsteinsdóttir,Christina C Melon,Monali Ray,Sharon Chakkalackal,Michelle Li,Jan E Cooper,Jennifer Chadder,Tirso W. Sáenz,Maria Carlota de Souza Paula,Wen Ke,Lexuan Li,Magdy A. Madkour,Sahar Aly,Nefertiti El-Nikhely,Sachin Chaturvedi,Victor Konde,Abdallah S. Daar,Abdallah S. Daar,Peter Singer +19 more
TL;DR: A survey of entrepreneurial collaborations among health biotech firms in developing countries reveals a surprisingly high level of collaboration but a lack of emphasis on new or improved health biotech products and processes.
Journal ArticleDOI
Tumor-stromal interactions in lung cancer: novel candidate targets for therapeutic intervention.
TL;DR: Considering the recent advances in understanding lung tumor stroma, lung cancer progression could be effectively hampered by combining cytotoxic strategies with therapies that target the TME, but more preclinical and clinical research is needed to prove the efficacy of this strategy for treating NSCLC.
Journal ArticleDOI
ABCB4 is frequently epigenetically silenced in human cancers and inhibits tumor growth.
Steffen Kiehl,Stefanie C. Herkt,Antje M. Richter,Liesa Fuhrmann,Nefertiti El-Nikhely,Werner Seeger,Rajkumar Savai,Reinhard Dammann +7 more
TL;DR: The findings suggest that ABCB4 is a frequently silenced gene in different cancers and it may act tumor suppressivly in lung cancer.
