Journal ArticleDOI
Diet and asthma, allergic rhinoconjunctivitis and atopic eczema symptom prevalence: an ecological analysis of the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) data. ISAAC Phase One Study Group.
Philippa Ellwood,M. I. Asher,Bengt Björkstén,Michael Leslie Burr,Neil Pearce,Colin F. Robertson +5 more
TL;DR: A consistent inverse relationship was seen between prevalence rates of the three conditions and the intake of starch, cereals, and vegetables, and if the average daily consumption of these foods increased, it is speculated that an important decrease in symptom prevalence may be achieved.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cancer mortality in workers exposed to chlorophenoxy herbicides and chlorophenols.
R. Saracci,Manolis Kogevinas,Regina Winkelmann,Pier Alberto Bertazzi,B.H. Bueno de Mesquita,David Coggon,Lois M. Green,Timo Kauppinen,K.A. L'Abbé,Margareta Littorin,Elsebeth Lynge,John D. Mathews,Manfred Neuberger,John Osman,Neil Pearce +14 more
TL;DR: Risks appeared to be increased for cancers of the testicle, thyroid, other endocrine glands, and nose and nasal cavity, based on small numbers of deaths, and the excess of soft-tissue sarcomas among sprayers does not seem to be specifically associated with those herbicides probably contaminated by TCDD.
Journal ArticleDOI
Comparison of asthma prevalence in the ISAAC and the ECRHS
Neil Pearce,Jordi Sunyer,Soo Cheng,Susan Chinn,Bengt Björkstén,Michael Leslie Burr,Ulrich Keil,H R Anderson,Peter Burney +8 more
TL;DR: There is good overall agreement between the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood and European Community Respiratory Health Survey study findings with regard to international prevalence patterns, and some of the key phenomena which future research must address are identified.
Journal ArticleDOI
Prevalence of symptoms of asthma, rhinitis and eczema in 13- to 14-year-old children in Africa: the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood Phase III.
Nadia Aït-Khaled,Joseph Odhiambo,Neil Pearce,K.S. Adjoh,I.A. Maesano,B. Benhabyles,Z. Bouhayad,E. Bahati,Camara Lm,C. Catteau,A. El Sony,Fabian Esamai,I.E. Hypolite,K. Melaku,O A A Musa,L. TL;DR: There were considerable variations between the various centres of Africa in the prevalence of the main symptoms of the three conditions: wheeze, allergic rhinoconjunctivitis and eczema.
Journal ArticleDOI
International patterns of tuberculosis and the prevalence of symptoms of asthma, rhinitis, and eczema
E. von Mutius,Neil Pearce,R Beasley,S Cheng,O. von Ehrenstein,B Björkstén,Stephan K. Weiland +6 more
TL;DR: Findings are consistent with recent experimental evidence which suggests that exposure to Mycobacterium tuberculosis may reduce the risk of developing asthma.
