Journal ArticleDOI
Metagenomics reveals sediment microbial community response to Deepwater Horizon oil spill
Olivia U. Mason,Nicole M. Scott,Antonio Gonzalez,Adam Robbins-Pianka,Jacob Bælum,Jeffrey A. Kimbrel,Nicholas J. Bouskill,Emmanuel Prestat,Sharon Borglin,Dominique C. Joyner,Julian L. Fortney,Diogo Jurelevicius,William T. Stringfellow,Lisa Alvarez-Cohen,Terry C. Hazen,Rob Knight,Jack A. Gilbert,Janet K. Jansson +17 more
TL;DR: Analysis of metagenomic sequence data revealed an increase in abundance of genes involved in denitrification pathways in samples that exceeded the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)’s benchmarks for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) compared with those that did not.
Journal ArticleDOI
Pre-exposure to drought increases the resistance of tropical forest soil bacterial communities to extended drought
Nicholas J. Bouskill,Hsiao Chien Lim,Sharon Borglin,Rohit Salve,Tana E. Wood,Tana E. Wood,Whendee L. Silver,Eoin L. Brodie +7 more
TL;DR: Soluble iron declined in treatment plots and was correlated with decreased soluble phosphorus concentrations, which may have significant implications for microbial productivity in these P-limited systems.
Journal ArticleDOI
Dynamic cyanobacterial response to hydration and dehydration in a desert biological soil crust
Lara Rajeev,Ulisses Nunes da Rocha,Niels Klitgord,Eric G. Luning,Julian L. Fortney,Seth D. Axen,Patrick M. Shih,Nicholas J. Bouskill,Benjamin P. Bowen,Cheryl A. Kerfeld,Ferran Garcia-Pichel,Ferran Garcia-Pichel,Eoin L. Brodie,Trent R. Northen,Aindrila Mukhopadhyay +14 more
TL;DR: Signs of preparation for future precipitation are observed, notably the expression of genes for anaplerotic reactions in drying crusts, and the stable maintenance of mRNA through dormancy, which shed light on possible synchronization between this cyanobacterium and its environment.
Journal ArticleDOI
Environmental factors determining ammonia‐oxidizing organism distribution and diversity in marine environments
TL;DR: Relative abundance of both groups of ammonia-oxidizing organisms (AOO and AOA) and the diversity of AOA across large-scale gradients in temperature, salinity and substrate concentration and dissolved oxygen suggests that the prevailing geochemistry, rather than localized dispersal, is the major driving factor determining OTU distribution.
Journal ArticleDOI
Temporal bacterial diversity associated with metal-contaminated river sediments
Nicholas J. Bouskill,Nicholas J. Bouskill,Jill Barker-Finkel,Tamara S. Galloway,Tamara S. Galloway,Richard D. Handy,Timothy E. Ford,Timothy E. Ford +7 more
TL;DR: A diverse and abundant community at the most polluted site indicates that historical contamination selects for a metal-resistant microbial community, a finding that must be accounted for when using the microbial community within ecosystem monitoring studies.
