Plankton networks driving carbon export in the oligotrophic ocean.
Lionel Guidi,Samuel Chaffron,Lucie Bittner,Damien Eveillard,Abdelhalim Larhlimi,Simon Roux,Youssef Darzi,Stéphane Audic,Léo Berline,Jennifer R. Brum,Luis Pedro Coelho,Julio Cesar Ignacio Espinoza,Shruti Malviya,Shinichi Sunagawa,Céline Dimier,Stefanie Kandels-Lewis,Marc Picheral,Julie Poulain,Sarah Searson,Lars Stemmann,Fabrice Not,Pascal Hingamp,Sabrina Speich,Mick Follows,Lee Karp-Boss,Emmanuel Boss,Hiroyuki Ogata,Stephane Pesant,Jean Weissenbach,Patrick Wincker,Silvia G. Acinas,Peer Bork,Daniele Iudicone,Matthew B. Sullivan,Jeroen Raes,Eric Karsenti,Chris Bowler,Gabriel Gorsky +37 more
TL;DR: It is shown that specific plankton communities, from the surface and deep chlorophyll maximum, correlate with carbon export at 150 m and that the relative abundance of a few bacterial and viral genes can predict a significant fraction of the variability in carbon export in these regions.

REVIEW: Predictive ecology in a changing world
Nicolas Mouquet,Yvan Lagadeuc,Vincent Devictor,Luc Doyen,Anne Duputié,Damien Eveillard,Denis Faure,Eric Garnier,Olivier Gimenez,Philippe Huneman,Franck Jabot,Philippe Jarne,Dominique Joly,Dominique Joly,Romain Julliard,Sonia Kéfi,Gael J. Kergoat,Sandra Lavorel,Line Le Gall,Laurence Meslin,Serge Morand,Xavier Morin,Hélène Morlon,Gilles Pinay,Roger Pradel,Frankl M. Schurr,Frankl M. Schurr,Wilfried Thuiller,Michel Loreau +28 more
TL;DR: The context provided by the current surge of ecological predictions on the future of biodiversity is used to clarify what prediction means, and to pinpoint the challenges that should be addressed in order to improve predictive ecological models and the way they are understood and used.
Journal ArticleDOI
Environmental factors determining ammonia‐oxidizing organism distribution and diversity in marine environments
TL;DR: Relative abundance of both groups of ammonia-oxidizing organisms (AOO and AOA) and the diversity of AOA across large-scale gradients in temperature, salinity and substrate concentration and dissolved oxygen suggests that the prevailing geochemistry, rather than localized dispersal, is the major driving factor determining OTU distribution.
Journal ArticleDOI
Tara Oceans: towards global ocean ecosystems biology.
Shinichi Sunagawa,Silvia G. Acinas,Peer Bork,Peer Bork,Chris Bowler,Tara Oceans Coordinators,Damien Eveillard,Gabriel Gorsky,Lionel Guidi,Daniele Iudicone,Eric Karsenti,Fabien Lombard,Hiroyuki Ogata,Stephane Pesant,Matthew B. Sullivan,Patrick Wincker,Colomban de Vargas +16 more
TL;DR: The work of Tara Oceans is reviewed, an international, multidisciplinary project to assess the complexity of ocean life across comprehensive taxonomic and spatial scales and how an ecosystems biology approach has expanded understanding of plankton diversity and ecology in the ocean as a planetary, interconnected ecosystem.
