Lymphatic mapping and sentinel lymphadenectomy for breast cancer

TL;DR: In this paper, a review examines data regarding axillary lymph node staging accuracy, indications and technical aspects of the procedure, and clinical trials investigating the technique, and concludes that sentinel lymphadenectomy accurately stages the axilla and is associated with less morbidity than axillary dissection.
Journal ArticleDOI

Prospective Observational Study of Sentinel Lymphadenectomy Without Further Axillary Dissection in Patients With Sentinel Node–Negative Breast Cancer

TL;DR: An absence of axillary recurrences supports SLND as an accurate staging alternative for breast cancer and suggests that routine ALND can be eliminated for patients with histopathologically negative sentinel nodes.
Journal ArticleDOI

Do all patients with sentinel node metastasis from breast carcinoma need complete axillary node dissection

TL;DR: It is shown that nonsentinel axillary lymph nodes are unlikely to contain tumor cells if the axillary sentinel node is tumor-free, but if a primary breast tumor is small and if sentinel nodes involvement is micrometastatic, then tumor cells are likely to be found in other axillary nodes.
Journal ArticleDOI

Breast Cancer Screening and Diagnosis, Version 3.2018, NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology.

TL;DR: This manuscript discusses the diagnostic evaluation of individuals with suspected breast cancer due to either abnormal imaging and/or physical findings.
Journal ArticleDOI

Comparison of Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy Alone and Completion Axillary Lymph Node Dissection for Node-Positive Breast Cancer

TL;DR: Compared with SLNB alone, completion AlND does not appear to improve outcomes for breast cancer patients with microscopic nodal metastases; however, there was a nonsignificant trend toward better outcomes with completion ALND for those with macroscopic disease.
