In the last few years, the application of Model Predictive Control (MPC) for energy management in buildings has received significant attention from the research community. MPC is becoming more and more viable because of the increase in computational power of building automation systems and the availability of a significant amount of monitored building data. MPC has found successful implementation in building thermal regulation, fully exploiting the potential of building thermal mass. Moreover, MPC has been positively applied to active energy storage systems, as well as to the optimal management of on-site renewable energy sources. MPC also opens up several opportunities for enhancing energy efficiency in the operation of Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems because of its ability to consider constraints, prediction of disturbances and multiple conflicting objectives, such as indoor thermal comfort and building energy demand. Despite the application of MPC algorithms in building control has been thoroughly investigated in various works, a unified framework that fully describes and formulates the implementation is still lacking. Firstly, this work introduces a common dictionary and taxonomy that gives a common ground to all the engineering disciplines involved in building design and control. Secondly the main scope of this paper is to define the MPC formulation framework and critically discuss the outcomes of different existing MPC algorithms for building and HVAC system management. The potential benefits of the application of MPC in improving energy efficiency in buildings were highlighted.

On heat pumps in smart grids: A review

In this paper, three novel designs of linear permanent magnet motors (LPMM) having moving magnets armature, are proposed for driving a direct drive linear reciprocating compressor in household refrigerator. The designs are then compared, including the configurations and static characteristics based on finite element analysis (FEA). In contrast to a conventional reciprocating compressor, a direct-drive linear compressor in which the piston is driven directly by a linear motor (LM) and resonant springs is considered a positive displacement. The analysis on performance of LPMM using the proposed designs is carried out on the magnetic flux-lines, magnetic field intensity, magnetic flux density, back-EMF and thrust force. The extensive simulation results indicate the effectiveness of the proposed designs.

Design and modeling of a single-phase linear permanent magnet motor for household refrigerator applications

This paper investigates the performance of a three designs of tubular linear permanent magnet motors (TLPMMs) with quasi-Halbach magnetized moving-magnet armature and slotted stator with a single-slot. The motors were developed for reciprocating compressor applications such as household refrigerators. The three designs have different magnet shape structures, and the stator core of all designs have employed a soft magnetic composite (SMC) material, Somaloy 700. Based on finite element analysis (FEA) an extensively analysis on the opencircuit magnetic field distribution, back-EMF, thrust force, fluxlinkage, winding inductance and cogging force in the three designs have been established. The simulation results indicate the effectiveness of the designs to drive a linear reciprocating compressor in household refrigerators, and also the simulation results have shown the superiority of the two designs with T-shape and trapezoidal magnet configurations, over the TLPMM with conventional rectangular magnet. Moreover, the permanent magnets (PMs) array arrangement has significant effects on the motor performance.

Linear permanent magnet motor for reciprocating compressor applications

The rate of integration of distributed generation (DG) using renewable sources is increasing in distribution networks because of their technical and economic advantages. However, mismatches in the timing of electricity demand and generation in distribution networks have restricted the penetration of non-dispatchable DGs such as photovoltaic (PV) plants. Such a problem associated with the integration of DGs in distribution networks could be eliminated using the proper application of battery energy storage systems. In this paper, optimal planning of battery-coupled distributed photovoltaic generators (BCDPGs) in distribution networks is presented. The optimal planning determines the size and location of BCDPGs and schedules the charging and discharging of the batteries, while minimizing the total energy losses subject to technical constraints. Limitation and Solution for Healthcare Network Using RFID Technology: A Review☆

Wireless technology has increasingly emerged as one of the demanding technologies in healthcare industry. Monitoring patients’ condition is a crucial task in any hospital to ensure patients are in good and stable condition. Wireless sensor network is the solution and has been widely introduced in measuring vital signs of patients such as temperature, heart rate, oxygen saturation, respiratory rate and others from remote location. Zigbee Network or accurately known as IEEE 802.15.4/Zigbee on the other hand is known to be a low power consumption device with good and stable data transmission range, higher network flexibility and large number of nodes. This work is discussing on integrating heart rate and temperature sensors to a wireless transceiver Zigbee (Xbee) module and is used to measure patients’ conditions from remote location (nurse’s station). Series of tests have been conducted using these devices to measure patients’ heart rate and body temperature for different genders and age group at lying down position. This is to ensure that the devices developed are reliable, stable and producing the same results as conventional devices (thermometer and heart beat reader). Results obtained are very encouraging; the developed devices are producing stable readings and are capable of transmitting information at reasonable distance.
