Journal ArticleDOI
Bilateral Deep Brain Stimulation vs Best Medical Therapy for Patients With Advanced Parkinson Disease: A Randomized Controlled Trial
Frances M. Weaver,Frances M. Weaver,Kenneth A. Follett,Matthew B. Stern,Matthew B. Stern,Kwan Hur,Crystal L. Harris,William J. Marks,William J. Marks,Johannes C. Rothlind,Johannes C. Rothlind,Oren Sagher,Domenic J. Reda,Claudia S. Moy,Rajesh Pahwa,Kim J. Burchiel,Kim J. Burchiel,Penelope Hogarth,Penelope Hogarth,Eugene C. Lai,Eugene C. Lai,John E. Duda,John E. Duda,Kathryn L. Holloway,Kathryn L. Holloway,Ali Samii,Stacy Horn,Jeff M. Bronstein,Gatana Stoner,Jill Heemskerk,Grant D. Huang +30 more
TL;DR: Deep brain stimulation was more effective than best medical therapy in improving on time without troubling dyskinesias, motor function, and quality of life at 6 months, but was associated with an increased risk of serious adverse events.
Journal ArticleDOI
Pallidal versus subthalamic deep-brain stimulation for Parkinson's disease.
Kenneth A. Follett,Kenneth A. Follett,Frances M. Weaver,Matthew B. Stern,Kwan Hur,Crystal L. Harris,Ping Luo,William J. Marks,Johannes C. Rothlind,Oren Sagher,Claudia S. Moy,Rajesh Pahwa,Kim J. Burchiel,Kim J. Burchiel,Penelope Hogarth,Eugene C. Lai,John E. Duda,Kathryn L. Holloway,Ali Samii,Stacy Horn,Jeff M. Bronstein,Gatana Stoner,Philip A. Starr,Richard K. Simpson,Gordon H. Baltuch,Antonio A.F. De Salles,Grant D. Huang,Domenic J. Reda +27 more
TL;DR: Patients with Parkinson's disease had similar improvement in motor function after either pallidal or subthalamic stimulation, and nonmotor factors may reasonably be included in the selection of surgical target for deep-brain stimulation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Deep brain stimulation for refractory obsessive-compulsive disorder
James L. Abelson,George C. Curtis,Oren Sagher,Ronald C. Albucher,Mark R. Harrigan,Stephan F. Taylor,Brian Martis,Bruno Giordani +7 more
TL;DR: It appears that DBS has potential value for treating refractory psychiatric disorders, but additional development work is needed before the procedure is utilized outside of carefully controlled research protocols.
Journal ArticleDOI
Rapid, label-free detection of brain tumors with stimulated Raman scattering microscopy.
Minbiao Ji,Daniel A. Orringer,Christian W. Freudiger,Shakti Ramkissoon,Shakti Ramkissoon,Xiaohui Liu,Darryl Lau,Alexandra J. Golby,Isaiah Norton,Marika Hayashi,Nathalie Y. R. Agar,Geoffrey S. Young,Cathie Spino,Sandro Santagata,Sandra Camelo-Piragua,Keith L. Ligon,Keith L. Ligon,Keith L. Ligon,Oren Sagher,X. Sunney Xie +19 more
TL;DR: It is shown that SRS microscopy could identify hypercellular tumor regions in fresh surgical specimens from a patient with glioblastoma, and a correlation between SRS and hematoxylin and eosin microscopy for detection of glioma infiltration is demonstrated.
Journal ArticleDOI
Rapid intraoperative histology of unprocessed surgical specimens via fibre-laser-based stimulated Raman scattering microscopy.
Daniel A. Orringer,Balaji Pandian,Yashar S. Niknafs,Todd C. Hollon,Julianne Boyle,Spencer Lewis,Mia Garrard,Shawn L. Hervey-Jumper,Hugh J. L. Garton,Cormac O. Maher,Jason Heth,Oren Sagher,D. Andrew Wilkinson,Matija Snuderl,Sriram Venneti,Shakti Ramkissoon,Kathryn McFadden,Amanda Fisher-Hubbard,Andrew P. Lieberman,Timothy D. Johnson,X. Sunney Xie,Jay Kenneth Trautman,Christian W. Freudiger,Sandra Camelo-Piragua +23 more
TL;DR: This work demonstrates the first application of SRS microscopy in the operating room by using a portable fibre-laser-based microscope and unprocessed specimens from 101 neurosurgical patients and builds and validated a multilayer perceptron based on quantified SRH image attributes that predicts brain-tumour subtype with 90% accuracy.
