LoCoH: Nonparameteric Kernel Methods for Constructing Home Ranges and Utilization Distributions

TL;DR: The results demonstrate that LoCoH methods are superior to parametric kernel methods in estimating areas used by animals, excluding unused areas (holes) and, generally, in constructing UDs and HRs arising from the movement of animals influenced by hard boundaries and irregular structures.
Journal ArticleDOI

Should we expect population thresholds for wildlife disease

TL;DR: It is seen that, by their nature, these thresholds are rarely abrupt and always difficult to measure, and important facets of wildlife ecology are neglected by current theories.
Journal ArticleDOI

Testing the assertion that ‘local food is best’: the challenges of an evidence-based approach

TL;DR: In this article, the authors conclude that food miles are a poor indicator of the environmental and ethical impacts of food production, and that only through combining spatially explicit life cycle assessment with analysis of social issues can the benefits of local food be assessed.
Journal ArticleDOI

Wildlife tuberculosis in South African conservation areas: implications and challenges.

TL;DR: Evidence suggests that 10 other small and large mammalian species, including large predators, are spillover hosts, and the risk of spillover infection to neighboring communal cattle raises concerns about human health at the wildlife-livestock-human interface.
