Journal ArticleDOI
The perfect storm: incarceration and the high-risk environment perpetuating transmission of HIV, hepatitis C virus, and tuberculosis in Eastern Europe and Central Asia
Frederick L. Altice,Lyuba Azbel,Jack Stone,Ellen Brooks-Pollock,Pavlo Smyrnov,Sergii Dvoriak,Faye S. Taxman,Nabila El-Bassel,Natasha K. Martin,Natasha K. Martin,Robert E. Booth,Heino Stöver,Kate Dolan,Peter Vickerman +13 more
TL;DR: Interventions that reduce incarceration itself and effectively intervene with prisoners to screen, diagnose, and treat addiction and HIV, hepatitis C virus, and tuberculosis are urgently needed to stem the multiple overlapping epidemics concentrated in prisons.
Journal ArticleDOI
Incarceration history and risk of HIV and hepatitis C virus acquisition among people who inject drugs: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Jack Stone,Hannah Fraser,Aaron G Lim,Josephine G. Walker,Zoe Ward,Louis MacGregor,Adam Trickey,Sam Abbott,Steffanie A. Strathdee,Daniela Abramovitz,Lisa Maher,Jenny Iversen,Julie Bruneau,Geng Zang,Richard S. Garfein,Yung Fen Yen,Tasnim Azim,Shruti H. Mehta,M.-J. Martin,Natasha K. Martin,Frederick L. Altice,Matthew Hickman,Peter Vickerman +49 more
TL;DR: Investigating whether incarceration history elevates HIV or HCV acquisition risk among PWID supports the need for developing novel interventions to minimise the risk of HCV and HIV acquisition, including addressing structural risks associated with drug laws and excessive incarceration of PWID.
Journal ArticleDOI
Challenges posed by COVID-19 to people who inject drugs and lessons from other outbreaks.
TL;DR: While relationships between drug use and blood‐borne and sexually transmitted infections are well studied, less attention has been paid to other infectious disease outbreaks among PWID.
Journal ArticleDOI
A network intervention that locates and intervenes with recently HIV-infected persons: The Transmission Reduction Intervention Project (TRIP).
Georgios K. Nikolopoulos,Georgios K. Nikolopoulos,Eirini Pavlitina,Stephen Q. Muth,John A. Schneider,Mina Psichogiou,Leslie D. Williams,Dimitrios Paraskevis,Vana Sypsa,Gkikas Magiorkinis,Gkikas Magiorkinis,Pavlo Smyrnov,Anya Korobchuk,Tetyana I. Vasylyeva,Britt Skaathun,Melpomeni Malliori,E. Kafetzopoulos,Angelos Hatzakis,Samuel R. Friedman +18 more
TL;DR: Strategic network tracing that starts with recently infected persons could support public health efforts to find and treat people early in their HIV infection.
Journal ArticleDOI
Molecular epidemiology reveals the role of war in the spread of HIV in Ukraine
Tetyana I. Vasylyeva,Mariia Liulchuk,Samuel R. Friedman,Iana Sazonova,Nuno R. Faria,Aris Katzourakis,Nataliia Babii,Alla Scherbinska,Julien Thézé,Oliver G. Pybus,Pavlo Smyrnov,Jean L. Mbisa,Dimitrios Paraskevis,Angelos Hatzakis,Gkikas Magiorkinis,Gkikas Magiorkinis,Gkikas Magiorkinis +16 more
TL;DR: The large-scale war-initiated movement of people (including those HIV-infected) was associated with patterns of HIV movement reconstructed from gene-sequence data, which suggest that virus dissemination was directed to the locations with the highest prevalence of risky sexual practices in people who inject drugs (PWID).
