Journal ArticleDOI

Productive dual infection of human CD4+ T lymphocytes by HIV-1 and HHV-6.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that HHV-6 and HIV-1 can productively co-infect individual human CD4+ T lymphocytes, resulting in accelerated HIV- 1 expression and cellular death, and evidence that HHv-6 transactivates the HIV-2 long terminal repeat (LTR) is presented.
Journal ArticleDOI

The Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome: An Update

TL;DR: The acquired immunodeficiency syndrome continues to be a major public health problem in the United States, and recently its spread worldwide has accelerated.
Journal ArticleDOI

Genomic diversity of human T-lymphotropic virus type III (HTLV-III).

TL;DR: It is indicated that different isolates of HTLV-III comprise a spectrum of highly related but distinguishable viruses and have important implications regarding the pathogenicity of HT LV-III and attempts to develop effective diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive measures for this virus.
Journal ArticleDOI

Structure and expression of tat-, rev-, and nef-specific transcripts of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 in infected lymphocytes and macrophages.

TL;DR: It appears that different cell types infected with different strains of HIV-1 maintain a similar balance of expression in which transcripts for nef vastly predominate over those for tat and that those for rev are intermediate in abundance.
