Journal ArticleDOI
Conceptual framework for understanding the bidirectional links between food insecurity and HIV/AIDS
Sheri D. Weiser,Sera L. Young,Sera L. Young,Craig R. Cohen,Margot Kushel,Alexander C. Tsai,Phyllis C. Tien,Phyllis C. Tien,Abigail M. Hatcher,Edward A. Frongillo,David R. Bangsberg,David R. Bangsberg +11 more
TL;DR: It is argued that there are nutritional, mental health, and behavioral pathways through which food insecurity leads to HIV acquisition and disease progression and effective interventions to reduce food insecurity and HIV depend on a rigorous understanding of these multifaceted relationships.
Journal ArticleDOI
Preclinical atherosclerosis due to HIV infection: carotid intima-medial thickness measurements from the FRAM study.
Carl Grunfeld,Joseph A.C. Delaney,Christine Wanke,Judith S. Currier,Rebecca Scherzer,Mary L. Biggs,Phyllis C. Tien,Michael G. Shlipak,Stephen Sidney,Joseph F. Polak,Daniel H. O'Leary,Peter Bacchetti,Richard A. Kronmal +12 more
TL;DR: The stronger association of HIV infection with IMT in the internal/bulb region compared with the common carotid may explain previous discrepancies in the literature and was similar to that of traditional CVD risk factors, such as smoking.
Journal ArticleDOI
Fat distribution in men with HIV infection.
Peter Bacchetti,Barbara Gripshover,Carl Grunfeld,Steven B. Heymsfield,Heather McCreath,Dennis Osmond,Michael S. Saag,Rebecca Scherzer,Michael G. Shlipak,Phyllis C. Tien,Metabolic Change in Hiv Infection +10 more
TL;DR: The fat changes that are specific to HIV infection in women are determined and peripheral lipoatrophy occurs commonly in HIV-infected women but is not associated with reciprocally increased VAT or trunk fat.
Journal ArticleDOI
Inflammation and mortality in HIV-infected adults: analysis of the FRAM study cohort.
Phyllis C. Tien,Andy I. Choi,Andrew R. Zolopa,Constance A. Benson,Russell P. Tracy,Rebecca Scherzer,Peter Bacchetti,Michael G. Shlipak,Carl Grunfeld +8 more
TL;DR: Fibrinogen and CRP are strong and independent predictors of mortality in HIV-infected adults and suggest that even in those with relatively preserved CD4 counts >500 cells per microliter, inflammation remains an important risk factor for mortality.
Journal ArticleDOI
Low CD4+ T cell count as a major atherosclerosis risk factor in HIV-infected women and men
Robert C. Kaplan,Lawrence A. Kingsley,Stephen J. Gange,Lorie Benning,Lisa P. Jacobson,Jason Lazar,Kathryn Anastos,Phyllis C. Tien,Phyllis C. Tien,A. Richey Sharrett,Howard N. Hodis +10 more
TL;DR: Beyond traditional cardiovascular disease risk factors, low CD4+ T-cell count is the most robust risk factor for increased subclinical carotid atherosclerosis in HIV-infected women and men.
