In-plane permeability characterization of engineering textiles based on radial flow experiments: A benchmark exercise

TL;DR: In this paper, the results of a third benchmark exercise using in-plane permeability measurement, based on systems applying the radial unsaturated injection method, were presented, where 19 participants using 20 systems characterized a non-crimp and a woven fabric at three different fiber volume contents, using a commercially available silicone oil as impregnating fluid.
Journal ArticleDOI

Specific features of flax fibres used to manufacture composite materials

TL;DR: In this paper, the specific nature of flax fibres with respect to manufacturing of biocomposites (defined here as polymers reinforced by natural fibres) is discussed. And the important steps in the process which influence final properties are analyzed, including the plant development, retting, fibre extraction, fibre treatment, preform preparation, available manufacturing processes, the impregnation step, fibre cell wall changes during processing and fibre/matrix adhesion.
Journal ArticleDOI

Capillary effects on flax fibers – Modification and characterization of the wetting dynamics

TL;DR: In this paper, the influence of flax fiber surface chemistry on the local wetting dynamics was studied, where flax reinforcements were submitted to a thermal treatment to modify the chemical composition of fiber surface.
Journal ArticleDOI

Capillary wicking in a fibrous reinforcement – Orthotropic issues to determine the capillary pressure components

TL;DR: In this article, a new definition of capillary pressure PcapPcap and an experimental technique to determine it are described and a good agreement with the Washburn equation has been shown and an equivalence with Darcy law has been proposed.

Capillary wicking in a fibrous reinforcement – Orthotropic issues to determine the capillary pressure components Part A Applied science and manufacturing

TL;DR: In this article, a new definition of capillary pressure Pcap and an experimental technique to determine it are described and a good agreement with the Washburn equation has been shown and an equivalence with Darcy law has been proposed.
