TL;DR: The idea that lactate, predominantly produced by astrocytes, is used as a supplementary fuel by neurons in vivo already under resting physiological conditions support the idea that glucose is a better substrate to support oxidative metabolism in these cells.

Arylamine N-acetyltransferase and arylalkylamine N-acetyltransferase in the mammalian pineal gland.

TL;DR: The results clearly establish that the pineal gland contains an arylamine N-acetyltransferase and a second, independently regulated arylalkylamine EMT, which appears to be primarily responsible for the physiological conversion of serotonin to melatonin via the intermediate N- acetylserotonin.
