Journal ArticleDOI
A Review of Solid-State Circuit Breakers
TL;DR: This article categorizes solid-state circuit breakers based on key features and subsystems, including power semiconductor devices, main circuit topologies, voltage clamping methods, gate drivers, fault detection methods, and commutation methods for power semiconductors.
Journal ArticleDOI
Coordinated Control of the Bus Tie Switches and Power Supply Converters for Fault Protection in DC Microgrids
TL;DR: In this article, coordinated operation of electronic power converters and mechanical contactors can rapidly isolate short circuit faults while maintaining continuity of power to loads in dc microgrids, which can be accomplished in milliseconds, during which time diode-isolated load-side hold-up capacitors continue supplying power to critical loads.
Journal ArticleDOI
Fault Detection and Isolation in Medium-Voltage DC Microgrids: Coordination Between Supply Power Converters and Bus Contactors
Pietro Cairoli,Roger A. Dougal +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, a fast and effective method for detecting and isolating faults in medium-voltage dc microgrids relies on rapid coordination between power supply converters and bus segmentizing contactors to limit currents and isolate faults without any need for fast communication between these active elements.
Journal ArticleDOI
Technical cross-fertilization between terrestrial microgrids and ship power systems
Robert E. Hebner,Fabian M. Uriarte,Alexis Kwasinski,Angelo L. Gattozzi,Hunter B. Estes,Asif Anwar,Pietro Cairoli,Roger A. Dougal,Xianyong Feng,Hung-Ming Chou,Laurence J. Thomas,Manisa Pipattanasomporn,Saifur Rahman,Farid Katiraei,Michael Steurer,M. Omar Faruque,Mario A. Rios,Gustavo Ramos,Mirrasoul J. Mousavi,T.J. McCoy +19 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors expose a variety of technical synergies from terrestrial microgrids and ship power systems to effectively advance their technologies and highlight how an understanding of both systems can reduce the investment in research resources.
Journal ArticleDOI
New Horizons in DC Shipboard Power Systems: New fault protection strategies are essential to the adoption of dc power systems.
Pietro Cairoli,Roger A. Dougal +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a dc power distribution system for ships, where a dc grid has significant benefits, yet significant challenges must also be overcome before these systems can be widely adopted.
