Journal ArticleDOI
The influence of aspect ratios and wall heating conditions on flow and passive pollutant exposure in 2D typical street canyons
Jian Hang,Xieyuan Chen,Guanwen Chen,Taihan Chen,Yuanyuan Lin,Zhiwen Luo,Xuelin Zhang,Qun Wang +7 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors employed computational fluid dynamic simulations with RNG k-e model to investigate the flow, and passive pollutant dispersion within scale-model two-dimensional street canyons.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effect of city shape on urban wind patterns and convective heat transfer in calm and stable background conditions
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the effect of shape on the urban heat island (UHI) effect and found that strong UHIs prefer stable background conditions, while the Nusselt number is significantly lower in a stable environment than in a neutral environment.
Journal ArticleDOI
Aerosol transmission of SARS-CoV-2 due to the chimney effect in two high-rise housing drainage stacks.
K Pollard,Qun Wang,Yuguo Li,David Christopher Lung,David Christopher Lung,Pak-To Chan,Chung-Hin Dung,Wei Jia,Te Miao,Jianxiang Huang,Wenzhao Chen,Zixuan Wang,Kai-Ming Leung,Zhang Lin,Daniel Wong,Herman Tse,Sally Cheuk-Ying Wong,Garnet K. Y. Choi,Jimmy Yiu-Wing Lam,Kelvin K. W. To,Vincent C.C. Cheng,Kwok-Yung Yuen +21 more
TL;DR: Wang et al. as discussed by the authors investigated two such outbreaks of COVID-19 in Hong Kong, identified the probable role of chimney effect-induced airflow in a building drainage system in the spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), and injected tracer gas (SF6) into the drainage stacks via the water closet of the index case.
Journal ArticleDOI
Urban heat island circulations over the Beijing-Tianjin region under calm and fair conditions
TL;DR: In this article, the authors studied the urban heat island circulations and other local atmospheric circulations over Beijing and Tianjin during a severe UHI event in 2012 and found that the presence of either of those urban areas modified the penetration of the sea-breeze circulation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Urban heat island circulations of an idealized circular city as affected by background wind speed
TL;DR: In this paper, two distinct wind regimes are found depending on the ratio of the horizontal convective scale velocity to the background velocity, referred to as the buoyancy velocity ratio, and coherent asymmetric vortex rings are exhibited, similar to the UHIC structure under calm conditions.
