Journal ArticleDOI
Antibodies inhibit prion propagation and clear cell cultures of prion infectivity
David Peretz,R. Anthony Williamson,Kiotoshi Kaneko,Julie Vergara,Estelle Leclerc,Gerold Schmitt-Ulms,Ingrid Mehlhorn,Giuseppe Legname,Mark R. Wormald,Pauline M. Rudd,Raymond A. Dwek,Dennis R. Burton,Stanley B. Prusiner +12 more
TL;DR: It is shown that antibodies binding cell-surface PrPC inhibit PrPSc formation in a dose-dependent manner, and this observations support the use of antibodies in the prevention and treatment of prion diseases and identify a region of PrPC for drug targeting.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cross-linking cellular prion protein triggers neuronal apoptosis in vivo.
Laura Solforosi,José R. Criado,Dorian B. McGavern,Sebastian A. Wirz,Manuel Sanchez-Alavez,Shuei Sugama,Lorraine A. DeGiorgio,Bruce T. Volpe,Erika Wiseman,Gil C. Abalos,Eliezer Masliah,Donald H. Gilden,Michael B. A. Oldstone,Bruno Conti,R. Anthony Williamson +14 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that PrPC functions in the control of neuronal survival and provides a model to explore whether cross-linking of PrPC by oligomeric PrPSc can promote neuronal loss during prion infection.
Journal ArticleDOI
Molecular profile of an antibody response to HIV-1 as probed by combinatorial libraries
Carlos F. Barbas,Thomas A. Collet,Willi Amberg,Paul Roben,James M. Binley,Denise M. Hoekstra,Doug Cababa,Terri Jones,R. Anthony Williamson,Glenn R. Pilkington,Nancy L. Haigwood,Edelmira Cabezas,Arnold C. Satterthwait,Iñaki Sanz,Dennis R. Burton +14 more
TL;DR: A large number (33) of human Fab fragments reacting with HIV-1 surface glycoprotein gp120 have been generated by selection from a combinatorial IgG1 kappa library displayed on the surface of phage.
Journal ArticleDOI
Strain-specified relative conformational stability of the scrapie prion protein.
David Peretz,Michael R. Scott,Darlene Groth,R. Anthony Williamson,Dennis R. Burton,Fred E. Cohen,Stanley B. Prusiner +6 more
TL;DR: The results support the unorthodox proposal that distinct PrPSc conformers encipher the biological properties of prion strains.
Journal ArticleDOI
Trafficking of prion proteins through a caveolae-mediated endosomal pathway
Peter J. Peters,Peter J. Peters,Alexander A. Mironov,David Peretz,Elly van Donselaar,Estelle Leclerc,Susanne Erpel,Stephen J. DeArmond,Dennis R. Burton,R. Anthony Williamson,Martin Vey,Stanley B. Prusiner +11 more
TL;DR: It is proposed that this nonclassical endocytic pathway is likely to determine the subcellular location of PrPC conversion and was not observed for several other glycosylphosphatidyl inositol (GPI)-anchored proteins.
