Journal Article

Mutagenicity and Cytotoxicity of Benzo(a)pyrene Benzo-Ring Epoxides

TL;DR: Four benzo-ring epoxides of the environmental carcinogen benzo(a)pyrene (BP) were tested for mutagenic and cytotoxic activity in 3 strains of Salmonella typhimurium and in Chinese hamster V79 cells.
Journal ArticleDOI

High mutagenicity and toxicity of a diol epoxide derived from benzo(a)pyrene.

TL;DR: BP 7,8-diol-9,10-epoxide was approximately 5, 10 and 40 times more mutagenic than benzo[a]pyrene 4,5-oxide (BP 4, 5-oxide) in strains TA 98 and TA 100 of S. typhimurium and in cultured Chinese hamster V79 cells.
Journal Article

Mutagenicity and Cytotoxicity of Benzo(a)pyrene Arene Oxides, Phenols, Quinones, and Dihydrodiols in Bacterial and Mammalian Cells

TL;DR: Benzo(a)pyrene 4,5-oxide was the most mutagenic of the compounds tested in both the bacterial and mammalian systems and was extremely cytotoxic to the V79 cells but had no observable toxicity in the bacterial strains.
Journal ArticleDOI

Differences in mutagenicity of the optical enantiomers of the diastereomeric benzo[a]pyrene 7,8-diol-9,10-epoxides.

TL;DR: These results with known metabolites of the environmental carcinogen benzo[a]pyrene represent the first report of differences in mutagenic activity among optical enantiomers.
Journal ArticleDOI

Effect of ellagic acid and hydroxylated flavonoids on the tumorigenicity of benzo[a]pyrene and (±)-7β, 8α-dihydroxy-9α, 10α-epoxy-7,8,9,10-tetrahydrobenzo[a]pyrene on mouse skin and in the newborn mouse

TL;DR: Treatment of preweanling mice with the above doses of the phenolic compounds 10 min before the i.p. injection of a total dose of 30 nmol of B[a]P 7,8-diol-9,10-epoxide-2 during the animal's first 15 days of life caused a 44-75% inhibition in the number of diol-EPoxide-induced pulmonary tumors per mouse.
