Journal ArticleDOI
Human Health Risk Assessment (HHRA) for environmental development and transfer of antibiotic resistance.
Nicholas J. Ashbolt,Alejandro Amézquita,Thomas Backhaus,Peter Borriello,Kristian K. Brandt,Peter Collignon,Anja Coors,Rita Finley,William H. Gaze,Thomas Heberer,John R. Lawrence,D. G. Joakim Larsson,Scott A. McEwen,Jim J. Ryan,Jens Schönfeld,Peter Silley,Jason Snape,Christel Van den Eede,Edward Topp +18 more
TL;DR: It is proposed that environmental aspects of antibiotic-resistance development be included in the processes of any HHRA addressing ARB, and a multicriteria decision analysis approach would be a useful way to undertake an HHRA of environmental antibiotic resistance that informs risk managers.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Scourge of Antibiotic Resistance: The Important Role of the Environment
Rita Finley,Peter Collignon,D. G. Joakim Larsson,Scott A. McEwen,Xian-Zhi Li,William H. Gaze,Richard J. Reid-Smith,Mohammed Timinouni,David W. Graham,Edward Topp +9 more
TL;DR: The rapid evolution and spread of "new" antibiotic resistance genes has been enhanced by modern human activity and its influence on the environmental resistome, which highlights the importance of including the role of the environmental vectors, such as bacterial genetic diversity within soil and water, in resistance risk management.
Journal ArticleDOI
Ceftiofur resistance in Salmonella enterica serovar Heidelberg from chicken meat and humans, Canada.
Lucie Dutil,Rebecca Irwin,Rita Finley,Lai King Ng,Brent P. Avery,Patrick Boerlin,Anne Marie Bourgault,Linda Cole,Danielle Daignault,Andrea Desruisseau,Walter Demczuk,Linda Hoang,Greg B. Horsman,Johanne Ismail,Frances B. Jamieson,Anne Maki,Ana Pacagnella,Dylan R Pillai +17 more
TL;DR: Use of this drug in chickens may limit effectiveness of cephalosporins in treating human infections.
Journal ArticleDOI
Evaluation of Clostridium difficile in dogs and the household environment.
TL;DR: Clostridium difficile was relatively common in households, suggesting that exposure to this pathogen may be a regular event, and there was no evidence that dogs are a significant source of household C.difficile contamination.
Journal Article
The Risk of Salmonellae Shedding by Dogs Fed Salmonella-contaminated Commercial Raw Food Diets
Rita Finley,Carl S. Ribble,Jeff Aramini,Meredith Vandermeer,Maria Popa,Marcus Litman,Richard J. Reid-Smith +6 more
TL;DR: Dogs fed Salmonella-contaminated raw food diets can shed salmonellae and may, therefore, be a source of environmental contamination potentially leading to human or animal illness.
