Oxidative Stress as an Underlying Contributor in the Development of Chronic Complications in Diabetes Mellitus

TL;DR: The present review briefly addresses the role of hyperglycemia in OS, describes some of the more commonly used biomarkers of oxidative/nitrosative damage and includes selected examples of studies which evaluated OS biomarkers in patients with diabetes, pointing to the relevance of such biological components in general oxidative stress status of diabetes mellitus carriers.
Journal ArticleDOI

Espécies reativas de oxigênio e de nitrogênio, antioxidantes e marcadores de dano oxidativo em sangue humano: principais métodos analíticos para sua determinação

TL;DR: In this article, the chemistry of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, their biological sources and targets, particularly, biomolecules implicated in the redox balance of the human blood, and appraise the analytical methods available for their detection and quantification.
Journal ArticleDOI

ERICA: prevalences of hypertension and obesity in Brazilian adolescents

Katia Vergetti Bloch, +39 more
TL;DR: The study indicates that the control of obesity would lower the prevalence of hypertension among Brazilian adolescents by 1/5 and the fractions of hypertension attributable to obesity in the population by 17.8%.
Journal ArticleDOI

The study of cardiovascular risk in adolescents – ERICA: rationale, design and sample characteristics of a national survey examining cardiovascular risk factor profile in Brazilian adolescents

Katia Vergetti Bloch, +47 more
- 07 Feb 2015 -
TL;DR: The study findings will be instrumental to the development of public policies aiming at the prevention of obesity, atherosclerotic diseases and diabetes in an adolescent population.
Journal ArticleDOI

Characterization of Blood Oxidative Stress in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Patients: Increase in Lipid Peroxidation and SOD Activity

TL;DR: Present data strongly suggest the involvement of oxidative stress in the pathophysiology of diabetes, revealing that the increased lipid peroxidation has a close relationship with high glucose levels, as observed by the fasting glucose and HbA1c levels.
