Molecular Variation at the SLC6A3 Locus Predicts Lifetime Risk of PTSD in the Detroit Neighborhood Health Study
Shun-Chiao Chang,Karestan C. Koenen,Sandro Galea,Allison E. Aiello,Richelo Soliven,Derek E. Wildman,Monica Uddin +6 more
TL;DR: Previous reports supporting a role for the 9R allele in increasing susceptibility to PTSD are confirmed, and preliminary evidence that a “double hit” model, including both a putatively reduced-function allele and high methylation in the promoter region, may more accurately capture molecular risk of PTSD at the SLC6A3 locus is provided.
Journal ArticleDOI
Latent profile analyses of posttraumatic stress disorder, depression and generalized anxiety disorder symptoms in trauma-exposed soldiers
Ateka A. Contractor,Ateka A. Contractor,Jon D. Elhai,Thomas H. Fine,Marijo Tamburrino,Gregory H. Cohen,Edwin Shirley,Philip K. Chan,Israel Liberzon,Sandro Galea,Sandro Galea,Joseph R. Calabrese +11 more
TL;DR: There is heterogeneity regarding severity of PTSD-depression-GAD symptomatology among trauma-exposed soldiers, with income and education predictive of class membership.
Journal ArticleDOI
DICER1 and microRNA regulation in post-traumatic stress disorder with comorbid depression
Aliza P. Wingo,Aliza P. Wingo,Lynn M. Almli,Jennifer S. Stevens,Torsten Klengel,Torsten Klengel,Monica Uddin,Yujing Li,Angela C. Bustamante,Adriana Lori,Nastassja Koen,Dan J. Stein,Alicia K. Smith,Allison E. Aiello,Karestan C. Koenen,Derek E. Wildman,Sandro Galea,Bekh Bradley,Bekh Bradley,Elisabeth B. Binder,Peng Jin,Greg Gibson,Kerry J. Ressler,Kerry J. Ressler +23 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a genome-wide differential gene expression survey of post-traumatic stress disorder with comorbid depression (PTSD&Dep) was conducted, and it was found that blood DICER1 expression is significantly reduced in cases versus controls, and replicate this in two independent cohorts.
Journal ArticleDOI
Overdose prevention for injection drug users: Lessons learned from naloxone training and distribution programs in New York City
Tinka Markham Piper,Sasha Rudenstine,Sharon Stancliff,Susan N Sherman,Vijay Nandi,Allan Clear,Sandro Galea +6 more
TL;DR: The challenges faced in the development and implementation of large-scale IDU naloxone administration training and distribution programs and the lessons learned during this process are described.
Journal ArticleDOI
Substance use and misuse in the aftermath of terrorism. A Bayesian meta-analysis.
TL;DR: The results underscore the potentially pervasive behavioral health effects of mass terrorism, and suggest that public health interventions may usefully consider substance use as an area of focus after such events.
