Journal ArticleDOI
Cytotoxic and anti-kinetoplastid potential of the essential oil of Alpinia speciosa K. Schum.
Pedro de Souza Pereira,Ana Josicleide Maia,Antonia Eliene Duarte,Cícera Datiane de Morais Oliveira-Tintino,Saulo R. Tintino,Luiz Marivando Barros,Maria Celeste Vega-Gomez,Miriam Rolón,Cathia Coronel,Henrique Douglas Melo Coutinho,Teresinha Gonçalves da Silva +10 more
TL;DR: It can be concluded that this is a pioneer in the potential of the A. speciosa essential oil and in the use against the parasites Trypanosoma cruzi Chagas and Leishmania brasiliensis Vianna, having its importance also rooted in this fact.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cholesterol and ergosterol affect the activity of Staphylococcus aureus antibiotic efflux pumps.
Saulo R. Tintino,Cícera Datiane de Morais Oliveira-Tintino,Fábia F. Campina,Maria Socorro da Costa,Rafael Pereira da Cruz,Raimundo Luiz Silva Pereira,Jacqueline Cosmo Andrade,Erlânio Oliveira de Sousa,José P. Siqueira-Júnior,Henrique Douglas Melo Coutinho,T.C. Leal-Balbino,Valdir de Queiroz Balbino +11 more
TL;DR: Besides the cholesterol did not affect directly the pump structure, a synergism was observed, maybe due the interaction with the cell membrane and interference in the lipid bilayer, which can be attributed to the detergent properties of cholesterol and ergosterol on account of their amphipathic structure.
Journal ArticleDOI
Thiazolidinedione and thiazole derivatives potentiate norfloxacin activity against NorA efflux pump over expression in Staphylococcus aureus 1199B strains
Pedro Silvino Pereira,Maria do Carmo Alves de Lima,Pedro Paulo Marcelino Neto,Cícera Datiane de Morais Oliveira-Tintino,Saulo R. Tintino,I. R. A. Menezes,Jamerson Ferreira de Oliveira,Pascal Marchand,Henrique Douglas Melo Coutinho,Maria D. Rodrigues,Teresinha Gonçalves da Silva +10 more
TL;DR: In conclusion, NJ16 and NJ17, in combination with norfloxacin, were able to completely restore the antibacterial activity of norflxacin against S. aureus SA-1199B, the norA-overexpressing strain, with low cytotoxicity in normal cells.
Journal ArticleDOI
Characterization and antibacterial activity of the essential oil obtained from the leaves of Baccharis coridifolia DC against multiresistant strains.
Priscilla Ramos Freitas,Ana Carolina Justino de Araújo,Cristina Rodrigues dos Santos Barbosa,Débora Feitosa Muniz,Janaína Esmeraldo Rocha,José Bezerra de Araújo Neto,Maria Milene Costa da Silva,Raimundo Luiz Silva Pereira,Luiz Everson da Silva,Wanderlei do Amaral,Cícero Deschamps,Saulo R. Tintino,Jaime Ribeiro-Filho,Henrique Douglas Melo Coutinho +13 more
TL;DR: The essential oil of Baccharis coridifolia (EOBc) presented antibacterial and antibiotic-modulating activities that place this species as a source of molecules useful in the fight against bacterial resistance.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cytotoxic, Trypanocidal, and Antifungal Activities of Eugenia jambolana L.
Karla K.A. Santos,Edinardo F.F. Matias,Saulo R. Tintino,Celestina E.S. Souza,Maria Flaviana Bezerra Morais Braga,Gláucia M.M. Guedes,Miriam Rolón,Celeste Vega,Antonieta Rojas de Arias,José Galberto Martins da Costa,Irwin Rose Alencar de Menezes,Henrique Douglas Melo Coutinho +11 more
TL;DR: The results indicate that E. jambolana could be a source of plant-derived natural products with anti-epimastigote and antifungal modifying activity with moderate toxicity.
